I've seen a sailplane land vertically from 10' with zero forward momentum...if the wind is strong enough ...anything can land and take off in a very short space.
There is a lift versus drag formula that is not friendly to forward motion unless you have a 747 with barn door sized flaps.
How they fly so slow still astonishing to me
