I hate to be a dick. However, there is a good possibility that this equipment results from a kind of simultaneous emergence, and serves as a teaching tool for evolutionary biology.

People who farm have long found this shape and size of hay bale to be advantageous for their own reasons, thus those who engineer farm equipment designed machinery to gather and bale the hay in this manner. But it's not like they realized after-the-fact that they had no way of hauling them around. The equipment for transporting the hay emerges and improves alongside the equipment for baling the hay that way in the first place. The same is true for a wide array of related methods and tools, right down to the bearings and wheels. It develops as a system.

I'll let the reader reach their own conclusions as to whether I am right about the evolution analogy.
