The more I think about it, diesel or Stirling electric is probably the way to go, should I ever have an opportunity to build a boat. I like the idea of 100% torque at any prop speed, and near instant prop reversal at any speed. Can't do that with direct to shaft diesels, got to get the RPMs down before shifting or you'll have a big mess of metal chunks and gear teeth to deal with. Single engine/generator, two drive motors, variable pitch props, that's the ticket. Could add solar to the mix if there was enough battery storage capacity.
