Speaking about questionable designs, I also worked on ATM components. NCR had these weird LCD modules that used a set of small fluoros [not quite as small as an inline backlight]. The video PCB and inverter PCBs were separate, the video board was under a metal cage with the inverters mounted on top, probably to be better influenced by the cooling fans. This aluminium cage had a number of narrow tabs, all but one of these was pointed outwards. The one pointing inwards was under the video board which is screwed to the frame. So in order to access the video board you had to remove the cage but this friggin tab made this an utter nuisance to do. I ended up taking to that tab with side cutters and would twist it off.
