Deepak Chopra in Toronto.... AGAIN! 2011-06-15/16

Look what bell end is coming to town... :waah:

rom.on.ca wrote:An Evening with Deepak Chopra

World renowned teacher, author and philosopher Deepak Chopra presents his latest concepts in the field of mind-body medicine bridging the technological miracles of the West with the wisdom of the East. He will show you how your highest vision of yourself can be turned into physical reality and discuss how you can become a living cell within the body of a living universe. You don't join the cosmic dance - you become the dance. Deepak will address the deeper meaning of our existence including: What is our true nature? What is the meaning and purpose of our existence? How can I transform myself? How can I make a better world? Deepak explains how the greatest spiritual secrets are tied up in this simple answer: You can't change the body without changing the self, and you can't change the self without bringing in the soul. He explains, "It's all one process, and it begins with knowing that your body exists to mirror who you are and who you want to be."

I for one am going to be writing a letter/email to the Royal Ontario Museum about this decision to allow such quackery into their otherwise superb museum. I've been there a number of times since I've moved to Toronto and it really is one of the top museums I've frequented. For them to lower their standards to this point of such pseudo-science is beyond disappointing. What next? Crystals? Homeopathy? Creation science? ...

Chopra really pisses me off the way he hides behind scientific terms and principles, bending them so far from reality that they are in no way applicable to anything he has to offer. Of course the largely woo loving masses don't care about this (or more aptly, are completely unaware), he is nothing short of a con man. A fucking extortionist, hiding behind his position of M.D. and fuckwitted attempts at science.

I would encourage people to write a letter or email to the ROM giving their opinions on the decision.

The address for the museum director is as follows...
William Thorsell
Director, the Royal Ontario Museum
100 Queen's Park
Toronto, ON
M5S 2C6

and an email can be sent to the museum here...
E-mail: publicaffairs@rom.on.ca

Museum directory can be found here; http://www.rom.on.ca/about/deptdir.php for further email addresses.

If people don't have the time (or can't be bothered) then you can always go to the Sandwalk Blogspot and sign the online letter/petition to the museum director.

Sandwalk Blog (sign a letter/petition);
http://sandwalk.blogspot.com/2010/05/de ... useum.html

Perhaps we could even create our own petition letter from this site and I can hand deliver it to the museum in the next week or so. Maybe we could also give people an opportunity to leave comments. Anyway some feedback would be much appreciated.

FYI... PZ Meyers also discusses this matter on his blog.

Cheers RatSkeppers, all and any feedback welcome!

Deepak Chopra in Toronto

#2  Postby Shrunk » May 22, 2010 8:09 pm

The New Age crackpot will be blathering his nonsense here in Toronto in June. Which is fine, except that the organizer of the talk is the Royal Ontario Museum.

University of Toronto biochemist Larry Moran has set up a petition on his blog protesting the ROM's endorsement of this event. Please sign if interested (477 sigs so far).

Looks like the ROM needs some $$$.

Well, Deepak Chopra belongs in a museum. Stuffed, with a sign that says "Early 21st century woo-peddler".

My e-mail to them:

I regret that the Royal Ontario Museum, an organization I have been pleased to hold a membership of in the past, has elected to sponsor a talk by the likes of Deepak Chopra.

I had understood that the ROM was intended to be a scientific institution. Now, instead, I see it supporting a presentation by someone who is the very antithesis of scientific, in fact is anti-scientific.

Please be advised that as long as it holds to support of superstition from the likes of this speaker, I shall not be able to support it any further.

I've been a member of the ROM for many years. My membership is up for renewal; they won't be getting another penny from me until they apologize for such nonsense.

Just like to point out that the open letter comes not directly from Larry Moran-- although he is the one collecting signatures-- but from the good people of the CASS (Committee for the Advancement of Scientific Skepticism), of which Larry is a member, which is a part of the Ontario CFI.

Not sure if anyone here is a member.
