Quantum Battery

#1  Postby felltoearth » Jan 10, 2018 12:22 pm

A friend of mine built a "Quantum Battery" challenging me to figure out how it works. The best I can figure is the LED is directing the flow of electrons from the stack of magnets and nuts using the stored potential of the magnets as a source (very crude explanation sorry).

Anyone have some insight?

What he has there is a stack of dissimilar metals with an electrolyte between them. It is the same thing as a battery, and the magnetism is a smoke screen, not required at all except it helps clamp it together.

There is an induced voltage between many different materials, which results in galvanic corrosion. No mystery at all. You can look up a table of the induced voltages in any 1st year materials science textbook.

Clamp aluminium and iron together, and you can measure a voltage. Even raw aluminium and stainless steel will corrode each other if clamped together with a conductive electrolyte.

This is how sacrificial anodes work as well. Put a block of the right metal on a steel construction and the natural corrosion will concentrate there, reducing corrosion on the important parts.

Suppose it really was a type of power source previously unknown...you would still have to generate the energy to produce the steel nuts, magnets, wires, and lead clamps all just to create the ability to power a tiny thing.

That's irrelevant if you get out more than you put in, which is what all these silly claims are driving at, getting people to believe they have found a way to tap perpetual power. They are all phony of course. You can of course get out more than you put in (nuclear for an extreme example) but only if the energy is there in some form to begin with, and it does of course run out. These nuts and magnets will corrode faster than if there was no circuit, and become waste, exactly like a used up battery.
