tuco wrote:Its actually kind of amusing, mostly harmless superstitions. Stupid is I dunno to throw 15% food away like average peer of us does.

In my mind it's difficult to accept such a thing as 'harmless' superstition.

It might be an intelligent way to make mistakes, but they are mistakes nonetheless. Superstition is seeing connections where there are none.

And as a result, costs of all stripes will flow from them, one way or another.

You're the one using the word stupid. I actually tried to say something quite the opposite. That superstition is a sign of intelligence, as in, an ability to connect bits of information.

That the bits don't actually connect isn't directly stupid, but it does lead to all kinds of harm. Or do you not see that?

Not everything is monkey business (politics), as you seem to imply here.

I post in context. Context here is post #7.

I guess you can present evidence that, for example, people who are superstitious about #13 or black cat do more harm to others then those who are not, because I am afraid connecting dots is not enough.

Now, back to my initial point. We live in world where millions, of our fellow human beings, die from lack of food, water and basic medicine yet we, the civilized world, throw food away, pollute like there is no tomorrow and waste resources just because we can afford it. If this is not stupid, I dunno what is but #13, to me, is not hence my comment about priorities.

Your priorities seem to be stupid superstitions and I am telling you, getting rid off #13 will not feed anyone.

Depends on superstition. Some are but I was not obviously taking about those. This thread is devoted to #13, house #13 respectively, and I clearly stated I was talking about "mostly harmless". And I repeat, I did not start the drama about stupid, but if its on .. what is stupid?

Nothing is stupid IMO, in the same way as it's difficult to state if anything is right or wrong.
Were the ancient numerologists stupid? The Bible is a book of numerology. The people who started to understand numbers realised that some were perfect or composite or prime, and so on.
13 was quite possibly the first number to be treated with some suspicion. It is prime and it didn't appear to contribute much.
But there were a dozen star signs, a dozen tribes, a dozen disciples because 12 was considered useful.
Superstition was almost certainly part of human survival strategy, whether evidenced or not.

Apollo 13 was launched at 13:13.
Coincidence, of course. But it added to the myth and to the awareness of the power of numbers.

Well in Edinburgh during the building boom on the south side of the city before the first world war there was never a number 13. I delivered newspapers there.

It doesn't bring luck, iron wards of the fairies and a horseshoe was often the most convenient form iron came in when you wanted to nail some iron above your door.
