What are your thoughts on neuro-linguistic programming(NLP)?

#1  Postby bogdan9310 » Feb 02, 2019 9:50 pm

Knowing how to control and manipulate your own thoughts can give you insights in how other people are thinking, and enable you to better understand and perceive the world in ways you never thought possible. There is always more than one perspective, sometimes people just can’t grasp this fact because they rely too much on the same old tools.

Neuro-linguistic programming, also known as NLP is one of those tools that can be used to enhance your perception of reality. Neuro refers to what happens inside your mind, linguistic relates not only to words, but also your body language and how you use it, and programming means rigging your persistent patterns and behaviors that you learn and then repeat.

I think that this thread should be in the pseudoscience section, if that answers your question.

I do find the etymology of the term interesting though, because it has absolutely no origins in either neuroscience, linguistics or computer science. It's like someone just put three intelligent-sounding words together to fool people, which I highly suspect is exactly what happened.

NLP is art, that's why it's not in a scientific section.

You are really out to get me. NLP works, and it's all that matters for me. Maybe I can make one or two people see what I see.

I can't see a dog, or the frog. Please help me, I'm covered in fog.

PS: I did actually look up what you were quoting. Very interesting.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neuro-lin ... _criticism

Numerous literature reviews and meta-analyses have failed to show evidence for NLP's assumptions or effectiveness as a therapeutic method.[90] While some NLP practitioners have argued that the lack of empirical support is due to insufficient research testing NLP,[91] the consensus scientific opinion is that NLP is pseudoscience[92] and that attempts to dismiss the research findings based on these arguments "[constitute]s an admission that NLP does not have an evidence base and that NLP practitioners are seeking a post-hoc credibility."[93]

It's a line from The Creativity Song. Lyrics here.

Lol, in what sense is it art?
She battled through in every kind of tribulation,
She revelled in adventure and imagination.
She never listened to no hater, liar,
Breaking boundaries and chasing fire.
Oh, my my! Oh my, she flies!

In the sense that there's no way to objectively evaluate it.

I think it says a lot that the OP made the choice to post in Pseudoscience - Debunking, yet he claims it works.
