Just do it!

#1  Postby Keep It Real » Aug 18, 2016 4:18 pm

Is it possible to simply overide all doubts, fears, procrastination, laziness etc. with the simple mantra "just do it now!"

I need to motivate myself to achieve my goals and am hoping this simple attitude/mantra can cut through/override all my hangups. Need to work out but can't be bothered - "Just do it!" etc. Some kind of all powerful inner command. How to make sure one obeys the command? Give the speaker of the inner voice a persona perhaps...Imagine it's Yorik Byrnson or Einstein speaking.

Another one of these threads I know. Feel free to point and laugh

No.

Motivating yourself to achieve goals has no magical solution. Caring about what you're trying to achieve, visualising your goal and being clear on what the steps are to achieving that goal and enjoying the process of achievement, are all pretty key things to help with goal achievement.

So you're still looking for the quick fix, KIR.

I just need something to get me going. Then habit can take over. What's wrong with a quick fix? Works with the medication I take.

Some things are amenable to a quick fix and some aren't, but a mantra can't hurt. Do whatever you need to do.

There's nothing wrong with something to get you going, but you want to override all your doubts, fears, procrastination, laziness, etc. with a phrase.

It's not just a phrase, it's a thought. Could work a bit better than this:

Phrase, thought, one comes from the other.

One thought could be all that's required, if it's the right thought, listened to with full attention and obeyed. It's the obeying bit which could prove tricky.

Of course it is. That's why it's unlikely that a single thought will simply override all your doubts, fears, etc. The reasons you can't ''just do it now'' aren't just going to dissolve if you think it. Like the reasons you keep relapsing don't dissolve every time you use the mantra 'today from midnight I'm clean''.

I'm not expecting my fears etc. to dissolve, just be overridden sufficiently to allow the desired activity to take place. Just fuck it and do it anyway is an appropriate attitude when faced with something as intractable as procrastination. I've been improving as far as the abstinence is concerned as the habit has formed. The mantra could be said to be the thing which got the ball rolling.

If you're into motivational bullshit, there's a Reddit thread dedicated to it:

Personally I think it's just an excuse for people to procrastinate. Stop wasting your time looking for a silver-bullet method and do the fucking thing.

No, it isn't. Yours is looking for a motivational silver bullet. Mine is actually doing the fucking thing. Subtle distinction, but it's the most important one

Fine, if you're so sure of that, why are you here asking about it? Do it and see what happens.

Geez, you'd have to pay Tony "Bilky" Robbins hundreds of dollars for this kind of advice.
