Scientists pinpoint the physical source of consciousness

#1  Postby the_5th_ape » Nov 19, 2016 6:56 am

For millennia, philosophers have struggled to define human consciousness. Now, a team of researchers led by neurologists at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) has pinpointed the regions of the brain that may play a role maintaining it. Their findings, which have already garnered multiple awards from the American Academy of Neurology, were published today in that society’s journal, Neurology.

“For the first time, we have found a connection between the brainstem region involved in arousal and regions involved in awareness, two prerequisites for consciousness,” said Michael D. Fox, MD, PhD, Director of the Laboratory for Brain Network Imaging and Modulation and the Associate Director of the Berenson-Allen Center for Noninvasive Brain Stimulation at BIDMC. “A lot of pieces of evidence all came together to point to this network playing a role in human consciousness.”

Another misleading thread title, I see.

The original article isn't much better. Their use of the word 'the', in " the regions of the brain", is, at best, poorly worded. It should have read 'a region' or 'some regions', using 'the' is way overstating what a scientist would usually say at this stage.

Agreed, especially if you make it 'some regions'. They need to look at such neural circuits as the cortico-thalamo-cortical loops, for example.

They have found a region of the brain that has something partially to do with coordinating our illusion of consciousness, which in any case runs about half a second behind the real (whatever that is) world?

And meanwhile all the rest of neurology goes towards embedded whole system distributed complex adaptive dynamic systems, not hunting out bits.

For example, ability to sense magnetism is probably a whole body process, including moving blood cells as needed, so there is an ability to sense magnetism but no magnetism organ, only some possibly slightly more specialised areas

Hint, when we pick up an egg without breaking it, our brains have very little to do with the grasping and holding movements.

In my younger days my consciousness was located in the tip of my prick. It's moved to my stomach now, which is why I'm a fat fuck.

I was wondering when someone would bring that nonsense up again. The "we only think we're conscious" bit of nonsense, started by some second rate philosopher (whose name escapes me) years ago.
LATE EDIT: Can anyone tell me how we can "think we're conscious" without actually being conscious? Perhaps you think we spend our whole lives in a kind of vivid dream! (Which I would describe as a special state of consciousness, in which the brain is in some sense re-configured.)
