You're not qualified to diagnose personality disorders.

I'm not qualified to perform a tracheotomy either but I reckon I'd make a pretty decent fist of it if somebody requiring one were staring me in the face.

Yes, those two things are alike.

And I don't hold relatively heavy approximately relevant academic qualifications in tracheotomies nor have I digested 1000s of pages of information specifically relevant to tracheotomy technique; nor do I aspire to become a professional tracheotomy technician.

Why are you equating performing a full medical and psychiatric history, a physical exam and lab tests and using specially designed interview and assessment tools over time in order to diagnose personality disorder with cutting a hole in someone's throat?

I have had OCD for over twenty years but that does not mean I am medically qualified to diagnose anyone else that has it or prescribe medication for them even if I can recognise the symptoms. Now it takes seven years to become a doctor here and almost longer to become a psychiatrist so stop thinking you are qualified because you are not. The only thing you can speak with authority about is your own condition as you experience it but nothing else. I am an expert on my own OCD but not on anyone elses since symptoms vary very significantly so you cannot extrapolate from the specific and apply it to the general

And yes stop with this superfluous and ridiculous analogy between tracheotomy and psychiatry
Stop talking about analogies period as you are only making a complex topic even more opaque

Well said.

I've obviously been educated about various psychological disorders, I know what the symptoms are, I can tell when they're being displayed, but if I think there might be something to it, I refer on. I work in tnis field and I am NOT QUALIFIED to diagnose anyone. If you want to be a psychoanalyst, and you want to have some validity by being accepted into a professional body KIR, you're going to have to exhibit the ability to recognise your professional limitations.

Also merely because you want to be something does not automatically mean that you will
Enthusiasm and self belief may be great motivators but to be successful requires far more

Yeah that's it, isn't it. You find it annoying when people point out simple facts to you. I'll say it again. If you want to be a psychoanalyst, a competent one, and recognised as such, you need to be able to prove that you are aware of the limit of your abilities and that you know what is ethical to do when you reach it. If you're not prepared to do that, you might as well give up now.

I don't see anything wrong with KIR suggesting to his special lady friend to get help, even if it is incredibly ironic. Pretending to be able to diagnose her, though, would be laughable if it weren't dangerous. It's like thinking you're qualified to work at an architecture firm because you played with Legos as a kid. "You don't think I'm qualified to design a building? What annoying, patronizing, condescending fluff!"

Not to detract from your point, but if you say "Legos" again, I might have to murder you in your sleep.

Thank you for your attention.

Apologies for the detraction, but whenever I hear "Legos", I think of this:

Or thinking you understand structural engineering because you built a paper model with washers.

Of the two, definitely Legi. I'm still leaning bloody vengeance-ward though.
