Hinduism as superior to Atheism...

#1  Postby endless psych » Mar 03, 2010 12:28 pm

In case anyone happens to be about this Sunday in Edinburgh about 14.00 Edinburgh Skeptics have a talk by a gent telling us why Hinduism is better then Atheism. It's part of the "Sunday Sermon" series where we invite members and woo-sters to give talks to generate discussion.

"Sean will explain features of Hinduism and Indian thought, and go through some arguments for a transcendent plane that eliminates the distinction between an atheistic and theistic realities by including both.

He will then go on to discuss personal gods and fundamental non-rational meaning as issuing from the interface between the relative world and the transcendent or absolute."

I believe there will be some waffle about mechanistic science and a large dollop of relativist bullshit.

Hecklers invited

(Would have posted this in events - but not sure if it qualifies as non-theism :? )

This is probably "out there" but that kind of gloss sounds awfully like the Hare Krishnas.

It should be "interesting" I'm not really sure if we, as a skeptical organisation, should nessecarily be giving a platform to someone who just wants to tell us we are wrong or evangalise.

The net result of this being we just demolish their arguments and take the piss...

It's sometimes fun at the time but I worry it sours the groups reputation.

Well, I've just been informed that the teachings of 'sri ramana maharshi' will "put your atheism at risk". Seems it's a branch of Hindu philosophy. The briefest of glances seems to indicate a rather hefty amount of navel-gazing. In fact, according to wiki:
Sri Ramana warned against considering self-enquiry as an intellectual exercise. Properly done, it involves fixing the attention firmly and intensely on the feeling of 'I', without thinking.

A properly atheistic hinduism would probsbly be quite a cool thing IMO.

Not a fudged version though.

Only if they promise to provide traditional Bengali cuisine throughout the year.

For people who do not know much about Hinduism here is a good description http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hinduism .
Its a mish- mash of many different rituals, cultures, superstitions etc..... so basically you can believe in anything and still be a hindu. My mother for example has a statue of mary and jesus along with some other hindu gods.
Well, there is even something called as atheism in Hindusim.
Dharmakirti, a 7th century buddhist philosopher deeply influenced by cārvāka philosophy, wrote in Pramanvartik:[5]

Believing that the Veda are standard (holy or divine), believing in a Creator for the world,
Bathing in holy waters for gaining punya, having pride (vanity) about one's caste,
Performing penance to absolve sins,
Are the five symptoms of having lost one's sanity.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atheism_in_Hinduism
Well unfortunately the above philosophy is not so prevalent.

I think that fits any theist religion. They are all out of touch with reality - have lost their sanity.

Adding curry powder to a strawman doesn't make it any more edible.

Hinduism would be as superior to Atheism if Atheism was actually a religion.

The philosophy of Carvaka indeed counts as atheism within the Hindu tadition, a pity that his writings have been lost in the passing of time.
