“We see the stories as poetic metaphors and a manifestation of the forces of nature and human psychology.”

:jawdrop: :o :? That sounds a lot like my religion.
I like to imagine ...

And 1000x more fun and interesting than any of the Abrahamic mythologies.

I've met a good number of these people in my life, and exactly 100% of them have been "not literal" about it. Plus I've heard of exactly 0 people in my entire life who literally believe in these gods. I would be amazed if any of these Icelanders are much different, it's more like a statue of Apollo or kissing under mistletoe.

Game of Thrones is based on the Nordic mythology, BTW! Best endorsement ever.

(fair disclaimer, I have met a person who uses runestones and bone bits to predict the future, like Tarot cards)

edit: fixed that grammar, thanks froggie

I presume you didn't mean the double negative?

Anyway, that's the way all gods go in the end, with nobody believing in them. That's the way the current crop of gods will go, to be replaced by something else, no doubt.

I hope so too. But serious faith is only really forced to retreat when we make it ridiculous and unrespectable, I think. In Denmark, the few Christians in my class were teased and mocked, and I think that helped.

That's why some religions are so desperate not to be mocked, and that's why we must insist on mocking them.

They do seem remarkably serious about their elves though.

Oh, the nisser? Sure, there are people who believe in those, bit like some people believe in fairies.
