Publisher caves in, withdraws book on history of Hinduism

Penguin Books India has caved in rather than defend its author Wendy Doniger, philologist and University of Chicago professor, for her book ‘The Hindus: An Alternative History’. As per a court-backed settlement with a Delhi-based Hindutva group, it has promised to withdraw all copies in India and pulp them at its own expense within six months.

Doniger has long been a hate object for Hindutva defenders. Her mixing of religion, sexuality and textual traditions, and her playful writing style, have made her scholarship hugely popular and attracted a chorus of criticism, even the occasional hurled egg.

Her book was challenged by several Hindu groups, including one called Shiksha Bachao Andolan, which claimed to detect, in her book, “Christian missionary zeal” and the approach of a “woman hungry for sex.” According to Dina Nath Batra, one of the petitioners, the book insults Hindu gods and goddesses, distorts history. (Some of the bits it flagged as offensive included the mention that Gandhi slept with girls, the line that there is no single Hindu canon, that Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi had tactically expressed loyalty to the British before her kingdom was attacked.)

On Monday, Batra and Gaurav Shrinagesh, CEO of Penguin Random House India, submitted a joint application to Additional District Judge Balwant Rai Bansal requesting him to record their settlement and allow the plaintiffs to withdraw the case. Their request was accepted by the judge, court sources confirmed on Tuesday.

Actually, the Hindus do have a very good reason for moderate hindus to be upset with that book, I have read it a long time back, cant even remember much, dont have it now any way. There is an orientalist approach to hinduism in most of the academical institutions in the west with new justifications of doing it for the sake of ex-untouchables,women etc(the oppressed classes), then there is a fanatic hindu right wing in India.
Indian academia is dominated by the left for 50 + yrs, so they dont give a damn, the right wing are not interested in debates, the moderate hindus dont have institutional support anywhere and hence dont know what to do. The person threatened to sue in court, because in India, by law, offensive things about religions are not allowed, strangely, the same liberals, dont support anything when its written against Islam, Humanities dept in these issues are not about debates even in harvard, its about academics authority. Thats why I find humanities disgusting. No violence, just law.
Every moment is a choice.Choices you make now determine your yourself of old choices made. Success is a journey, not a destination.
