Get a Job! Not

#1  Postby kennyc » May 01, 2014 12:14 pm

I blame it on affluence, sense of entitlement, lack of incentive, disgust at corporate slavery practices....

American teens don’t want to work
Decline in summer jobs can’t all be blamed on the economy

By Catey Hill, MarketWatch

Here’s yet another thing your teenager doesn’t want to do this summer: get a job.

Image

The number of teens with summer jobs has fallen roughly 30 percentage points since the late ‘70s. In 1978, nearly three in four teenagers (71.8%) ages 16 to 19 held a summer job, but as of last year, only about four in 10 teens did, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics for the month of July analyzed by outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas . It’s been a steady decline, seen even during good times: During the dot-com boom in the late 1990s, when national unemployment was only about 4%, roughly six in 10 teens held summer jobs. Even recently, with the economy recovering, fewer teens opted for jobs: Last year’s summer job gain was down 3% from the summer payrolls in 2012, the report revealed.

You were lucky. We had to work in the winter as well. Up before dawn to scrub the street before the better folk were allowed to take their carriages over it.

Summer? Luxury. We used to sit in our single room with only half a floor and dream about summer.

Don't joke! A doctor set up a town health service in India and the nurses were put up in a room with no front wall!

I have such deep admiration for people who are prepared to work with the sick under terrible conditions.

In all seriousness, I was found a newspaper round in the morning 7/7and 2 in the afternoon from age 11 and was expected to put my earnings in the communal family pot up to leaving school at 15. I took my exams before my 16th birthday and the day after started my first full time job. Now aged 42, I have been working solidly for 31yrs apart from two breaks of 1 week between jobs.
I ask the kids to do things like clear the dishes and its like I've just sold them into slavery.

You have to sell a lot of goddamned chips to pay the price you charge for booze up there.

My kids used to get extra pocket money for doing chores. They helped with everything: cooking, laundry, cleaning, gardening there was no excuse that someone had "too much homework." Even when they were students, they helped around the house in between doing their studies. I never cleaned their bedrooms, that was their job.

Seriously monkeyboy, you need to take a break.

Before I was old enough for a paying job, the only summer work available was baling hay. A can't remember how much we got paid, but it wasn't much. I think it was measured in cents per bale we put up into the barn.

My DH worked in all sorts of shops when he was in high school. Possibly the cake and sweet shop was where he got his sweet tooth.

I had a summer job in the old Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh over the Festival once. It was like Passchendaele without the laughs.

My first job was a summer job working in a petrol station. My interview was almost word-for-word "You really want to work here?", "You're not going to nick stuff, right?", "When can you start?"
It was hard at times, the night-shift was an education, and the pay was basic but I had some fun and learnt some lessons. In all, it was a good experience.

(I did nick stuff, sort of, not really, but in a way)
Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to lose,
And nothin' ain't worth nothin' but it's free.

I worked Saturdays & all school/college holidays from the age of 15 until I started work full time. I've worked in M&S, Harrods, dog kennels, a cider factory, nannying, ironing & teaching English to foreign students. My parents didn't give me an option but then they couldn't afford to either.

Both of my kids have done various holiday/Saturday jobs eg shop assistants & waitressing. I think it helps kids grow up & realise they have to work for things.

Are employers in America allowed to rip off teens with less than minimum wage employment, like they are in the UK?
