B.B.C. Article
Analysis of black organic fragments found in the Sutton Hoo boat burial has revealed they are bitumen from Syria.
The Suffolk site was excavated in 1939. Gold and garnet jewellery, silverware and ceremonial armour were discovered.
The small black objects scattered among the 7th Century finds were believed to be pine tar used for boat maintenance.
British Museum and Aberdeen University experts have revealed they are bitumen and said they demonstrated the "far-reaching" Anglo-Saxon trade network.

I suspect that those trade networks were established long before, in Roman times.

I thought well before that - there is a sea going canoe at Falmouth 5000 years old.

Bronze Age required extensive knowledge and materials exchanges, and well before back to Stone Age

Certainly, but there was a bit of a hiatus, wasn't there, after the Roman empire collapsed in western Europe, and I'm not sure we necessarily knew that Anglo-Saxon England was trading, directly or indirectly, as early as the 7th century with, in fact, the Romans (the Byzantine empire).

Maybe we did, I don't know.

I went to Sutton hoo last year, the stuff there is amazing.

I would love that king who was buried there to be a descendant of Arthur.

A once and future king might be useful at the moment :-)

It is not obvious there ever was a hiatus. If people know how to build and sail boats and trade stuff, why would they stop? Loss of direct administration, but I thought the idea of the dark ages is mistaken, mainly because people started using timber instead of stone and brick.

And the admin centre moved East to Constantinople, Roman Empire technically did not end until 1919.

Of course could argue it was in hibernation from 1919 to signing of treaty of Rome :-)

I probably work on a historical model of people moving themselves, ideas and things as being more important than whatever admin systems or battles might have happened where :-)

I have the impression that the overthrow of the western Roman empire by the barbarian invaders was a bit more radical than a change in administrative system. But I bow to the superior knowledge of anybody who has any!

Trade between pre Roman Britain and the Mediterranean existed as well, it is probable that Tin was exported from Cornwall to Bronze age Greece, so I don't think this so surprising.

You're not suggesting that trade networks between Britain & Syria were established by canoe, I assume?

Why not? Trade networks over much greater expanses of open ocean were established by canoe in the Pacific Island nations.

Don't make the mistake of thinking "canoe" refers to two-person dugouts.

This traditionally-built and sailed Polynesian canoe was recently in the Great Lakes - and met up with a replica Viking ship in the Erie Canal.

Yeah but we're talking about 5,000 years ago. I'm no expert but suspect they had nothing like that back then. Plus the Pacific is open water, whereas the route between Britain & Syria would have required more precise navigation (several turns etc.)... to be done on a regular basis.

Bloody Syrians, coming over 'ere, trading their bitumen, adding to our cultural 'eritage. It's an outrage. That's what it is, a bloody outrage.

Do you really think it's easier to navigate over open water to small landing sites (islands in an ocean) than it is to navigate within range of shore sightings to confirm position and other needed references?

And the Polynesians completed their expansion/migration about 3,000 years ago - but didn't have the advantages of the Bronze Age technological advancements or the multiple cultures with which to engage in trade in knowledge and materials. They did it all with Stone Age technology.
