Fucking, shitting, pissing, helping, killing, eating, mourning, empathy, hatred...

It's all human.

Hitler was an extreme human.

I don't want to emulate him, but I am jealous.

Another thought provoking post.

I remember the music commentator Paul Gambaccini observing that Freddie Mercury singing live had the potential to use his awesome charisma for nefarious purposes, that if he wanted to, he could use his extraordinary power over audiences for something a lot more sinister than a sing-along. I'm not so sure, but it made me think about Hitler v Mercury - lives of extraordinary drama, power and, ultimately, self-realisation against all the odds (the wastrel from Braunau am Inn and the immigrant from Zanzibar), twisting the impossible in to the possible by sheer force of personality.

Force of personality my arse. He was a tool, and without the back-up he received from parts of the German industry he would have gone precisely nowhere, no matter what personality. Step back a little and observe the utter ridiculousness of his public apperarances. A petty bourgeois' wet dream come true. Chaplin was spot on.

And rabbity Freddie? No, I don't think so either.

You have no idea!
From wikipedia:

Hitler was reportedly very fond of Blondi, keeping her by his side and allowing her to sleep in his bedroom in the bunker. This affection was not shared by Eva Braun, Hitler's mistress (and later his wife), who preferred her two Scottish Terrier dogs named Negus and Stasi (or Katuschka).[14][15] According to Hitler's secretary (Traudl Junge), Eva hated Blondi and was known to kick her under the dining table.[16]

I disagree.

As far as the "exhilarating" goes, for most of his life he experienced failure after crushing failure. Prior to the Nazi thing, his greatest accomplishment was being wounded in the trenches of WWI.

And "rewarding"? He lived his life in a haze of fear and hatred, taking his own life in the ruins of everything he tried to achieve.

I am not sure, but I don't think people like Hitler or Ghadaffi are very happy. That is a broad statement, I don't rule out that some of those people were actually very happy for most of their lives. Hitler was in all likelihood a frustrated, paranoid individual who was constantly in fear for his life. Ghadaffi had similar issues I think.

Plato's Republic had a lot to say on the subject.

Yeah, but if you're goinig to mad, it's best to do it with power. Nobody pays any attention to people who go mad without power.

Is this about the "magnificence of Nazism" or is it more like "Hitler was so badass, man, but not that I'd do that shit"?

The thread title is provocative - perhaps inverted commas around the word magnificence would have been a good idea.

Hitler was a cunt, but the effect of his existence on human history was "magnificent" in a terrible way, just as Genghis Khan and other despots had a gigantic, incredible impact.
