Who is qualified to be an expert on god?

#1  Postby romansh » Apr 16, 2017 9:12 pm

John implies that someone can't be an expert on god or is less likely to be able to speak about the properties of god

But name one expert on god that is more expert than anyone else you can think of.
In hindsight open a new thread .... called experts on god ... please.

and let me answer with a  and you can add one of these to any future names that might come up.

So here's an opportunity to say who we think can speak about god and what are their qualifications to do so.

I can't help thinking there are some seven billion plus people knowledgeable enough to to about god.

Satan, because he was God's first son and probably knows him best.

Hate to do it so early in the thread but, which god?

Well since I provided the inspiration for the thread I think it only fair that it be the God I imagine.

Well, everyone who believes in a god imagines their own version, don't they?

There is no single god to be an expert in.

You have a bit of a head start when it comes to being an expert on an entity you imagine, John.

I myself am an expert on Znocklefrooms. You may be wondering: what are Znocklefrooms? Ask away. My knowledge about the arbitrary shit I can make up is unparalleled.

It's been pretty well established that atheist know the religion they are surrounded by better than more than half of the believers. I forgot the actual numbers, but most believers don't know shit about their dogmas and creeds, which would include their notions about what their god is.

I believe I am the resident expert on the Invisible Pink Unicorn (MHHNBS). Just last week several of my socks were raptured and returned in the same wash cycle.

You say that, but are they true Znocklefrooms?

I somehow doubt it. The Great, the Only, the Majestic Znocklefroomious the First is currently dictating the Holy Scripture of the Knockles, and I am transcribing it, error-free (obvs) as we speak.

But are you transcribing it in old Znocklelfroomian or revised Znockelfroomian? I warn you now, if it's the revised one, then it looks like you are flirting with heresy.

Aah yes, your imaginary god who you revere via the machinery of your imaginary version of catholicism. Kind of loosely based on the god of the bible with the worst psychotic bits conveniently removed as it suits you and a self defined catholicism that wouldn't be recognised as such by practicing Catholics. A most flexible arrangement and quite pointless referring to in discussions on say, the god of the Bible or indeed religion in general since your imagination is prone to moving goalposts around, changing sports and humptydumpty speak. Yes I guess you're the expert on that one version of a god amongst the thousands out there. Not that that is any use to anyone other than fans of the sports of jelly nailing or fog plaiting. I am neither.

All of them. I happen to have some expertise on gods myself - in fact I conducted an experiment once which conclusively proved that none of them like pizza. Well, I mean, that has to be the reason why none of them showed up when I invited them all to a pizza night. What other explanation could there be?

Me, me, me, ME!
I have NO BELIEF in the existence of a God or gods. I do not have to offer evidence nor do I have to determine absence of evidence because I do not ASSERT that a God does or does not or gods do or do not exist.

That's my point.

People are really only an expert in the God they imagine. And since atheists imagine no God, they are experts in no God.
