Dudes on the Internet

#1  Postby AcadianDriftwood » Jun 20, 2012 1:11 am

I loved this video because I related to a lot of my experiences on previous forums that I came here from. I got a lot of harsh treatment, but men who held the same views as me, and sometimes even more radical, did not get the harsh treatment I got.

Actually one male person who attacked me because of my views is actually NICE to another person with similar, but more radical, views. This person pees standing up, obviously.

You're a gamer and a woman? :o Just kidding. I do see this happen and I think it has to do with the anonymity of the internet. One of my friends will claim how women are the inferior species and how they should know their place but when his girlfriend is around, he is the biggest bitch and gives in to her every whim. It may have to do with masculinity perceived verses masculinity that their reality.

I've never played a game where a woman was playing with a mic ever so I have no experience of gaming with them on a social level. Obvious I've probably played with tons anonymously. I've always wondered if it was because they were being pushed out by men or simply don't play the type of games I enjoy.
Also: why do they never have female characters in FPS in multiplayer?

My gaming has always been solo. Except in the early 2000s when i was pretty hardcore about starcraft. So i've never experienced this type of crap personally. I'm not sure how I'd react to a situation like that

I am not a gamer, but I have posted on forums and got a lot of abuse, while males with similar views did not.

I am a gamer and am always assumed to be a male with a female character.
She battled through in every kind of tribulation,
She revelled in adventure and imagination.
She never listened to no hater, liar,
Breaking boundaries and chasing fire.
Oh, my my! Oh my, she flies!

For some odd reason I always need to remind me of the fact that you are female. Might be that for some reason the name "Fallible" is assoziated with male for me!? O wait.... ^^

I thought the boiler was making a funny noise - turns out it's a hoarde of rationalists trying to sneak up on me.

I find the anti-semitism to be most shocking, completely taken aback by the anti-jewish venom. I suppose it's because I encounter or observe all the other forms of bigotry on a regular or semi-regular basis, but it's enormously rare for me to hear the nazi-style Jew bashing, mainly because sounding like Hitler doesn't make you cool or popular since we had a jolly big war about it some years back.

I suppose I should step back and realise it's just kids (adults kids too) that make themselves feel better by making others feel worse. When I was young the medium was the playground, now the medium is the global internet. Nothing new, just made more efficient by technology.

I didn't realise anti-semitism existed until I was 21. I mean, I knew that Hitler had a problem with Jewish people, but I thought that was just one of his oddball neuroses. I also didn't realise that there was a Jewish identity. I thought it was just another religion. Probably should have watched more Woody Allen films.

I suppose I should step back and realise it's just kids (adults kids too) that make themselves feel better by making others feel worse. When I was young the medium was the playground, now the medium is the global internet. Nothing new, just made more efficient by technology.
And you have the comfort of anonymity of course to act like a complete jerk in a public space. But that should cut both ways. It's easier to confront those jerks when you're anonymous too.
