Going Godless: Does Secularism Make People More Ethical?

Non-believers are often more educated, more tolerant and know more about God than the pious. A new wave of research is trying to figure out what goes on in the minds of an ever-growing group of people known as the "Nones".

Yes, because the basic assumption of theists - that you need a god to tell you what to do is immoral - it abdicates our responsibility.

Hmm... hard to formulate the correct sentence. I guess 'secularism may make some people from some religious backgrounds more ethical and reflected'.

I know that in my own case, I had to start thinking about the very underlying reasons for morality and for the basis of belief and so on and so forth, when I started to realize that I'd become an atheist. Before that, all answers could be fairly summed up with "God wants it that way, as shown in our interpretation of his inspired texts".

That makes for a very narrow view of the world, and quite bereft of deep thought.

But not everyone who are religious is the kind of religious that I was; some (are 'allowed to') have a larger perspective on things.

Two individuals - both religious - may have different moralities
Two individuals - neither religious - may have different moralities
Two individuals - one religious, one not - may have similar moralities
Individual morality is therefore is not referenced by religion but psychology
