Racial Attitudes in Southern US

#1  Postby Brasky » Jun 03, 2010 8:51 pm

I just wanted to post some polling data regarding racial attitudes of Southern (and Northern) Whites in the United States. All of the information may be found in: Racial Attitudes in America, Trends and Interpretations Harvard University Press.

Why did I want to post this you ask? I regularly run across comments regarding the racist South. This data is relevant to the claim. Certainly a few of the responses were surprising to me...

1) Do you think white students and black students should go to the same or to separate schools? (% favoring same).

South: 45% (1963); 68% (1971); 92% (1982)
North: 82% (1963); 98% (1982)

2) Do you think there should be laws against marriage between blacks and whites? (% opposing).

South: 20% (1963); 40% (1972); 48% (1982)
North: 45% (1963); 65% (1972); 70% (1982)

3) Do you think Negroes should have as good a chance as white person to get any kind of job? (% favoring equal job opportunities).

South: 75% (1963); 90% (1972)
North: 88% (1963); 92% (1972)

4) Which of these statements would you agree with: white peple have the right to keep black people out of their neighborhood fi they want to, or black people have a right to live wherever they can afford to, just like anybody else? (% against discrimination).

South: 39% (1963); 50% (1970); 70% (1976)
North: 70% (1963); 80% (1970); 85% (1976)

5) Do you think Negroes should have the right to use the same parks, restaurants, and hotels as white people? (% Positive Response)

South: 44% (1963); 46% (1965); 66% (1970)
North: 85% (1963); 95% (1970)

6) How strongly would you object if a member of your family wanted to bring a black friend home to dinner? (% Having No Objection)

South: 30% (1963); 50% (1970); 60% (1982)
North: 60% (1963); 70% (1970); 75% (1982)

7) How far up the scale or how far down the scale would you rate the following organizations: Ku Klux Klan? (Highly Unfavorable Verus All Other Responses)

South: 75% (1964); 65% (1980)
North: 90% (1964); 78% (1980)

Do you have a link to the study to read further? When was this study from anyways as it looks like the most recent data is from 28 years ago? It would be very interesting to compare this information with some more recent data.

1) Yes. black kids are just as smart, if not more, as any other race give the same opportunity
2) No. If there is a law I already broke it twice.
3) Yes, jobs should be given to those that qualify not based on race
4)or black people have a right to live wherever they can afford to, just like anybody else? (however, my husband and I prefers to live in mixed neighborhood, not totally white, not totally black)
5) I can't believe this kind of question is even being asked
6) My family is the dish
7)no comment/not worthy to even think about

No, all I have is the book. However, the book relies on surveys from primarily two sources: National Opinion Research Center (NORC) and the Institute for Social Research (ISR).

I have no links to either of these survey sources mostly because I am too lazy to do a Google search. :)

They do seem to converge a bit, those numbers. Between 1963 and 1982, the numbers are coming together a little.

And it looks as if they, by and by, forgot about the KKK in the North.
