A thread for suggested reading on sociology.
I'll start.
Emile Durkheim - Elementary forms of religious life.
Emile Durkheim - Rules of Sociological Method.
Max Weber - The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism.
Marx. These are some of the classic early works, I would suggest reading everything by these but they're a little boring. The protestant ethic is essentially a very long essay.
Georg Simmel - Anything. Particularly On Individuality and Social Forms. My favourite sociologist
Talcott Parson - The Social System. The classic functionalist approach. Old hat but his work needs to be understood.
Anything by Robert Merton, Herbert Blumer, Norbert Elias, Erving Goffman, David Lockwood, Harold Garfinkel, Louis Althusser, Pierre Bourdieu, Nancy Chodorow, Micheal Focuoult.Just another bunch of the "classic" sociologists to get started. You'll probably recognise some names as they also fall under different disciplines.
Obviously here I've suggested original works, ideally you need to read a decent introduction to sociology or an overview of some of the authors. Some of the original works are heavy going and will be a complete waste of time of you don't have a good grounding in sociology and are unaware of sociological terms and definitions. Hopefully other posters can suggest some introductions, I'm just kicking off the thread with these.
There's loads more but I'm just quoting from memory, god knows where all my old books are!
