mindhack wrote:In my perception multiculturalism popped into existence when political figures pushed diffuse and ill defined feelings of social insecurity into a little box and labeled it “the failings of multiculturalism” as the source of it all.

As I see it, its use is to appeal to a supposedly threatened national ideal, using people’s feelings of insecurity or to their ill defined search for belonging.

Used by these politicians it’s a loaded, normative concept, used to express an opinion of rejection, with political intend.

Written out it would be something like this:

Multiculturalism is brought about by party X. It is the source of many problems you people have. We, part Y oppose it. Vote for us!

That's very recent. I remember when "multiculturalism" was touted as the next great and wonderful thing to replace the "melting pot" which was then the subject of the kind of blame you are (correctly) describing "multiculturalism" as now. But no, it didn't just pop into existence when you say it did; it is much older.

It still isn't clear to me what it was supposed to have meant back then, though.

Wiki states that the term "multiculturalism" was first used in the 19th century by the emperor of Austria-Hungary. He adopted new laws to alleviate feelings of dissent under minority groups. This because nationalism was on the rise in his multi-cultural empire. Later, after WWII, the notion of "cultural relativism" was added to the concept.

The recent aversion against multiculturalism might have more to do with people rejecting cultural relativism then the old notion of multiculturalism.
Arguments meh, I want evidence.

"Multiculturalism", is a politically correct arseholes shortened way of saying "Integration has failed, because, for years, we were too scared of offending anyone. We still are, so we will use this word, rather than admit some people hate our way of life so much, they would rather kill their kids, than let them integrate! " Its apologetics.
