Why are breasts bad?

#1  Postby juːtoʊpiə » Mar 07, 2010 3:09 pm

Why are breasts bad? Why isit that in society, there is nothing wrong with talking about (or exposing) the chest of a male, but if you should mention (or expose) breasts in public (especially in front of children :o ) you will be met with frosty silence, dissapproving looks, and social pariahship?

What is it that makes these fine:

But these a evil, corruptiong influence:

I cannot fathom why this is the case; I can't think of any reason as to why this disparity should exist, and yet it does. Do any of you wonderful people have any insight into this?

Because they are sinful bags of temptation.

I blame religion, women get a bad rap, our bodies are rude and sinful allegedly, we only use our boobs to feed babies and tease poor men into lustful ways :naughty2:

My guess is that womens breasts are WAY more sexualized than mens. And with that sexualisation comes all the taboos along with it.

Breasts generally aren't a big deal in Europe and Africa.
Actually they're not that big a deal when you get older either (unless you're some Christian or Muslim).
I think the main fascination and arousal with them as an adolescent was that they were something "forbidden".

I think that it's the function they have in the female of providing sustenance, which in males is not a normal function. In cultures that are paternalistic to the point of misogyny, it is (a) mysterious and (b) a subject of jealousy. Therefore, it's to be banned as sinful.

If men could lactate, I think those same misogynistic societies would worship the breast.

(To me, the old flabby ones are not bad, any more than someone's old well-lined face is bad. Most of us can put up with talking to a senior's face.)

I think breasts are over sexualised, so we have to cover them up like we do our other 'rude bits'.

I don't have sons so maybe its different but I don't make any attempt to hide my breasts around my two daughters (both breastfed), both think 'boobems' are great. They see me dressing, they tell daddy pants off for grabbing them when I'm trying to cook, both pretend to breastfeed their dolls, the two year old still remembers being breastfed and calls them 'my boobems'. Even better are boobies in the bath, nothing better then floaty boobs

Maybe I'm inadvertently raising a pair of exhibitionists :ask: I just don't see any point in making them taboo, yeah you've got to cover them up when you go out (and that still might not stop them being stared at) but hiding them while dressing or bathing at home would just be silly, I don't want my girls to ever be ashamed of their bodies.

It's the "in front of children " part that I can't get my head around. I recently had a conversation with an employee of a lutheran kindergarten, where she was harping about a collegue who aparantly took pleasure in wearing a spaghetti top. The main concern was "what if due to some accident her breasts would be exposed and one of the children could see it?" - which is certainly quite confusing to me: aren't breasts designed (pun intended!) for the children in the first place? OMG! Think of all the newborn babies around the world that are being exposed to nudity!

I'm exactly the same at home, nakedness just doesn't bother me. My girls grew up seeing my boobs (and other bits) on a daily basis, my bedroom door was a free for all, as was the bathroom, I didn't get a bath in peace for years

They've seen me go topless on holiday and never batted an eye, they know I bared my boobs at a music festival a few years ago (at the age of 36 :naughty2: what a liberating experience!) and think I'm a bit of a rockmum, but they seem to have turned out a bit more prudish than me despite all this, both claim they would never go topless on the beach

Except my music festival boob baring was done before they were born

Edit: And you have a Tim Minchin signature  I think I love you :hugs:

I have noted that its mostly men commenting tho.......all you need to do apparently is put 'boobs' in the title and they're like flies round ....you know what I mean :shifty:

Edit: Just noticed the OP actually said 'Breasts'....very mature

Well to take a more practical look at it (sorry guys), the western world seem to be the only places in this world where breasts are even an issue. :dunno:
It extends a bit beyond the western/1. world, but almost never where people have not been brainwashed by one or other of the Abrahamic religions.
