I note that the Asus Chromebook C202 with 2GB of RAM fellto linked to in the opening post is one of three models in the under $200 section the author regards as worth keeping an eye out for.

You will also comfortably be able to use your Chromebook to word process and to use spreadsheets with 2GB of RAM. However, if you use spreadsheets with lots of data and formulas, then you may see that your Chromebook will start performing slowly.

Pretty much as I thought.

The way kids treat their machines it is amazing that they still work. Cheap and sturdy verging on the venerable brick shithouse is what is required and this sounds as close as you can get and cheap enough.

How's the word processor and Excel analog? Can you easily convert MS docs and spreadsheets? I don't do that much with them any more, but there's a LOT of old stuff I still need.

I don't like being that tied in to Google, but what the fuck, cheap is cheap.

They seem to import MS files well in my experience - you can try them on Chrome on the PC

I shall give that a try. Nearly time for a new laptop, may be a CB would work.

The Chromebook runs Android apps. Mine runs the few casual Android games I've tried - Angry Birds and the like. I'd get a porkier 4Gb Chromebook than the C202 if was my only machine.
