I've always loved Conway's Game of Life. I first learned about it when I was 12 or so, and have written it in several separate programming languages as a learning exercise.

If you find the complex behavior resulting from cellular automata such as Conway's Game of Life interesting, check out Stephen Wolfram's book "A New Kind of Science"

It has a sort of ridiculous amount of self-congratulation and patting on the back, but other than that, it's full of A LOT of very interesting information about cellular automata.

Thanks for the recommendation. I must admit that after my first attempt at a GoL model I'm now intrigued so see if I can have a go at what was at the end of CdesignProponentsist 's links.
