:this: is awesome! A friend of mine actually managed to growl all the lyrics (he's in a death metal band now), but this one is just fucking brilliant.

A little selection of those I like.

Cover of a Rolling Stones track.

Beatles, obviously.

Just awesome!

Interesting, if not a match for the original.

JC's version of Hurt has to be the single greatest example of the cover being magnitudes better than the original. No matter who wrote or recorded it first, that is Johny's song.
Any time the subject of covers comes up I have to throw in Stevie Ray Vaughn's rendition of Little Wing.

Since Grim brought up Stevie Ray -
Voodoo Chile

Doesn't surpass the Hendrix original, more of a tribute.
Hendrix:

And while on the subject of Jimi (and Mr S brought up the subject of Dylan covers above), why not one of the greatest covers?

Interesting how often Hendrix is being covered. I also like Clapton's Little Wing version:

Cat Power's done some interesting covers - when you can take an already popular or classic song and make it your own, that's sumpthin':
