I don't understand why only 20 views with no comments.

Maybe if people knew what wonderful instruments went into creating this beautiful music it would be better appreciated.

Perhaps people need to see the beauty of Missa Johnouchi to appreciate this composer.

Well, I’ll comment.

I listened to “Stardust Tapestry” 4X and “Seasons” and “Asian Winds” once.

There is beauty in the music, no doubt. Being able to fully appreciate it isn’t easy however since I have western ears and grew up on Liszt, Chopin, Beethoven, etc. Incidentally, “Asian Winds” was very good.

From my POV that doesn’t make any difference. While I appreciate hearing different instruments (or unusual variations on an instrument), music in my opinion stands on its own regardless of how it was created. For example I’ve tried (desperately) to appreciate John Cage, George Crumb et al., despite the fact that they were innovators, their music leaves me stone cold. Well, with one exception. I can listen to Cage’s 4’33” and I find it very, very pleasing.

Her looks are totally irrelevant in my opinion. If she produced music that touched my soul she could look like Godzilla and I’d put her on a pedestal. In actual fact, until I looked at her picture, I had no idea whether Missa was a male or a female. I went straight to the video before going further down your post.

Thanks for bringing her to my (and others’) attention. With some music it takes time to appreciate it. For example, when I first heard Rhapsody in Blue I loved it. When I first heave Liszt’s Sonata in B, I was cool to it and only stuck with it because of a friend that told me that it was a work of genius. As it turned out, it’s now my favourite sonata, and in my opinion, is the best sonata that’s ever been composed, even surpassing Beethoven.

It's a misconception that it's 4'33 of silence - it's actually 4'33 of whatever sounds emanate from the audience. Not my cup of tea. There's an older actually silent work though by some composer in the 1920s, iirc, where the work keeps switching meters and tempos all the time. This is for an ensemble though, so the thing you get is a conductor waving his baton in complex changing patterns, while the ensemble turn the pages on occasion.

Sounds like some middle-of-the-road crap you'd hear in an elevator. There's better Asian music out there.

First of all, include my full quote, not a quote mine. :naughty:

Second, Bollox is hardly descriptive of your position. Care to elaborate on that or are you just spraying “hit and run” shit on the forum with no intention of an actual intelligent discussion?

I don't think the full quote was needed. The music is not suitably different to Western classical music to warrant saying fully appreciating it doesn't come easily. In fact I think the music is rather Westernised. It reminds me of those dreadful pan pipe albums which were all the rage in the 90s.

I disagree. Classical music is basically a reasonable combination of treble and bass, with predominant treble being the exception rather than the rule. La Campanella for example, pushes the limit of almost non-stop playing in the higher register.

While it’s enjoyable, I couldn’t listen to an entire symphony or to a piano concerto written like that.

From my experience, and mine only, Eastern music tends to mimic that style, and as I stated, my western ears find it hard to fully appreciate it.

Could you provide some Youtube examples so I can evaluate some of it?

No one instrument can be calming as much as Ney imo, maybe my ears and soul more used to it since it belongs to my country. You try and comment please there is another informative video about that instrument and Kudsi Ergüner.

I have to agree with Animavore, I think the video in the OP sounds too much like elevator music. lol. And despite growing up in the Western world, I have no trouble liking asian music, SP. :P

Hero had a beautiful soundtrack. First time I heard an erhu, tbh.

And Okami probably has one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard in a video game.

Unfortunately, Okami's best songs don't really fit the "mellow" theme of the thread.

John Cage himself didn't call for that lawsuit, iirc, but some of his lawyers did it basically on autopilot.
