Kaison wrote:The Simpson's has been shit for years now, IMO. So, I was pleasantly surprised to find some good yucks in the movie. Based on that, it seems that the writers still have the ability to write good things. Not sure why none of them seem to make it into the TV show. My 2 cents.

They brought back some of the old writers for the movie. Like John Schwartzwelder (writer of 59 episodes) and George Meyer. They also spent much, much longer on the script for the movie than they do on regular episodes.

I think they're trying too hard now to appear relevant and 'with-it'. They shoehorn new technology into episodes, not for jokes but just, it seems, for the purposes of saying "Look kids! We can haz I-Pods!! We haz INTERWEBZ!" in the manner of your slightly embarrassing uncle suddenly wearing a chain on his low-slung jeans.
I mean, sure it had to progress, and maybe I'm being too nostalgic, but the Simpsons was funnier when set in an early 90s world.

I actually like Season 21, it's a lot better than the last few seasons. Now the new Futurama, that is complete bullshit. It's just not funny anymore...

I don't mind the new episodes to be honest, even the bad episodes can make me laugh cause it is laughter on how bad the episode is. Put yourself in the writers shoes for a minute, when a TV show regardless of what genre has been around for years it does get difficult for the writers to come up with new, sure you can get new writers on board but you will only end up bringing back the old writers at some point. As long as people buy the merchanise and want more episodes then the more episodes will be made. Animated shows are different from live action cause in a live action show the actors age along with the characters but with an animated show that doesn't happen so that is why animated shows generally have more episodes then live action shows do.
Also when a TV show has been on the air for a long time many fans think they own the show and think they can tell the writers what to do thinking they know what is best for the show, but the truth is it is the writers (along with the producers and the show runners) who know what is best for the show and sometimes you will get many bad episodes (maybe they do that on purpose) and then all of the sudden you will get good new episodes.
Disagree with an opinion just say so but don't be a dick about it.

Just the new intro is so contrived. Adding "gags" to the familiar scenes that don't do one iota for them, and which are so obviously un-funny that I cannot fathom why it was approved.

One of the problems with a lot of US series is they don't know when to call it a day. Floggin a dead horse comes to mind.
In the words of Lisa Simpson - how long do they expect us to swallow this tripe?
I think the first episode I thought at the end 'that wasn't very funny' was the tomacco one, and that was probably 10 years ago. It's been downhill from there imo.
I sometimes worry some of my favourite shows, like MadMen or Breaking Bad, will become like many syndicated shows with arbitrary story lines every week and guest stars.

I was just looking at the Wiki homepage and it happened to have the Frank Grimes episode as the pick of the day.
I was surprised to read the reception it got in America http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homer%27s_Enemy#Reception

According to Josh Weinstein, when the episode was first broadcast, many fans felt it was too dark, lacked humor and that Homer was portrayed as overly bad-mannered. Weinstein considers this episode one of the most controversial of the seasons he ran, as it involves sharp observational humor which he thinks many fans "didn't get." Weinstein also talks about a "generation gap"—he believes the episode was originally panned by viewers, but has since become a favorite among fans who grew up with the show.

Over this side of the water this type of humour would hardly have batted an eyelid.

Happy Birthday by the way :drunk:

I always found that episode to be pretty dark. The amount of times I've seen it has dulled the sensation somewhat, but seeing people laugh as his coffin is lowered into the ground was a bit too much for me the first time around. It felt like laughter had been turned into something horrible. :shifty:

I think it was something I hadn't come to expect from The Simpsons at that point and the feeling has stuck with me. If South Park had done it, i probably would have laughed myself silly (Family Guy is another), but I hadn't experienced that sort of humour too much by the time that episode popped up and I wasn't prepared for it to go there. I think that because they've continued to make fun of the character later on and lampooned the notion, it's made it easier for me to watch.

There was actually a funeral in this town of a guy who was a bit on the plump side and as they were lowering the coffin it got a bit tight about halfway down and the coffin got stuck and the one of the gravediggers had to push it down with the handle end of his shovel and some people started laughing.
To make it worse, the person who told me this, a girl, was telling me this in a really upset way, like she couldn't believe people would laugh at someone's funeral and I had to bite my lip because I thought it was the funniest thing ever.

I'm laughing thinking about it now.

When Grimes goes "Blah! Blah!" when freaking out at the end is genius observation. It's exactly the type of thing that happens when otherwise quiet people totally lose their tempers and have a nervous breakdown.

Couldn't agree more.
It seems to me than the successful US series keep going on, no matter how bad they turn, just for the sake of making money. They got loyal viewers. Hell, i am not a loyal viewer and if i turned the TV on and saw the Simpsons, i would leave it there.

And with that Family Guy crossover episode, The Simpsons has completely lost its soul.
