I think ISO might be the culprit.

I want to upgrade from from a D3100 to a more modern body with better specs. I enjoy macro and wildlife photography. I have a 105mm Sigma macro lens and a 70-300mm Sigma lens. I don't want to upgrade on the lens yet.

Perhaps my reasoning is incorrect but I feel that a body with a larger sensor is going to take me to the next step. I'm trying not to blame the bad workmanship on the tools and I recon my shots are reasonable. However, I'm hoping that a 24 megapixel sensor will be a good improvement over my current 14 megapixel sensor. Or am I looking in the wrong direction?

I have been searching the internet for a suitable upgrade that won't break the bank and I'm confused by all the choices. D3400, D3500, D5300 etc.

Where do I go from here?

Nope. Honestly. People like the finish. It sounds weird but film has soul.

Well, it's totally impractical to me for various reasons.

Cost of buying another camera.
Cost of getting film to the development lab.
Cost of processing compared to digital.
Convenience of digital. Take many pics and discard bad ones.
etc etc...

There are very few film processing places left in this country.

I am only saying how things are changing. I think it will be a niche product. Mind you I have all my gear still; a Minolta with three lenses so I might just try it.

The announced Pannie FF mirrorless might work but not sure of lens compatibility

We have a few labs here but it's not worth the effort. Too far away and too pricey.

Have to admit; after being to Africa and taking loads of pics it makes me want to invest more in camera and maybe do a small course in photography or see if I can find a club to join.

Adco from what I've seen of your shots you don't need much in the way of skill set. I often think the real challenge is taking the time to get out and shoot and also travelling....so much can be done post these days.

Amnivore ........your camera is fine ....and a lot is done in post. A 4k screen will let you see your photos as you saw them to shoot and crop and alter them a bit for lighting and detail.
At times....taking your breath away......only a decent screen can give you the tools for bringing out the best in framing and cropping.

Thanks. I get out into the garden almost daily and also travel a fair bit, especially to the Pilansberg Reserve. That is why I want to upgrade. I've invested a lot of time into this hobby and want to improve as much as possible. Finances being the limiting factor.

Regarding post, I crop and sharpness slightly, that's all. Unless I want a special effect I don't like changing colours and levels etc. I prefer pics that are close to original.

Hhhmmmmm... I don’t think sound quality had much to do with it.
