She battled through in every kind of tribulation,
She revelled in adventure and imagination.
She never listened to no hater, liar,
Breaking boundaries and chasing fire.
Oh, my my! Oh my, she flies!

I agree Jacquitoo and often write science oriented poems such as this:

Quantum Soup

Cook it up in empty space
a dash of beauty
some truth and charm
mix it up in an expanding storm

Cool it down
to baryon foam
for the atoms
to make our home

It's Valentines Day & I need a sweet poem to write in this card, it's for a girl who is probably too young for me. Her father would chase me down the road if he knew I was his age.
Any ideas?

Does she know you are interested? If she does and she's okay with it, three short lines written composed by you would more than suffice. Doesn't have to be a 'proper haiku', it just has to express what you feel, if possible in a way that isn't 'icky', if you know what I mean.

Along the lines of:

Thinking of you
makes me smile (etc.)

From my POV your own heartfelt sentiments would mean much more than someone else's poetry.

Think of an image that encapsulates what you feel and express it, as I said, in simple sentences.

I window watch as you learn your A B C
And wonder why society says you're to young for me.
Somehow with four fingers you count 1 2 3
Your father doesn't understand, he'd probably kill me.

BEHOLD!

The Vermilion Lantern oath

”In blackest day, in darker night,
No evil shall be spared their life,
Let those who follow such path of blight,
Their souls be swallowed by the Vermilion light.”

(An old one but maybe appropriate here)

The Dancing Philosophers

Logic and rhetoric dance to the beat
holding emotion at bay.

Emotion then catches logic's eye,
cuts in, and dances in time.

Rhetoric envies the figure they make
as they twirl upon the floor.

Emotion and logic are closer it seems
Than rhetoric ever dreamed.

No new poem, but I just noticed that I got a nice and completely unsolicited review of my poetry book "No Longer Dressed in Black" on Amazon. Woo-Hoo!

Are there any poets on this board? Anybody willing to share any of their pieces?

Here are a few of mine...

Infinity.......and the slice of it I cling to.
So precious, but I really dont appreciate how much yet.
My life.....this "I".....whose significance I pass through.
Time, space and imagination....limited to a mere moment.

What is it I experience...
I ask whilst experiencing it...
Why should I live...
I ask whilst living it...
What is the purpose...
I ask whilst fullfilling it...

My day is divided between asleep and awake.
One is real.... the other is fake.
Yet when I dream I can be aware I can wake.
These places I go...the things I do....these people I see.
In my dreams.....there all tiny parts.....that are reflecting my "awake" reality.
I am aware of them.....are they aware of me.......when there shouldnt be we.....because everything in them is me.

So if I live in a world that I think is a mess......are my dreams part of me trying to sort out some sense.
If dreams are reflections of what I see as my reality........then what is shaping reality (if not "me")
Given that thought, im now left with an incomplete view.......I think ill use faith to fill the gaps if I need to.

Unimaginable pain and fear.....that I have tasted.
I know it exists yet how do I erase it???
I can try the best for me.........but what of them???
Whats good for me....isnt necesarily whats needed by all men.

Even if I could bear this shoulder of responsibility.
Nobody gave this task......I take it upon willingly.
Yet I ask who am I to set the rules of life and law.
I am not owner of the animals, lands or shore.

I am nobody except my own keeper....only I can take myself into the future.

Sometimes it rains...huge looming and ominous storms. But is not raing outside.... its raining in me.

I tell myself I have control over life.Yet this independent will can do nothing but hold on and weather the emotional storm... at its mercy.

Covering oneselfs up... remembering sunny days... waiting for a break in the clouds.

Jumbled and hazy.
Some funny, some crazy.
Fast paced and lazy.
Just a few memories that make me.

A few have gave a light hearted touch.
Whilst others... just seem to much...
And at the heart, at the crux
Is the reason, the person and why we take so much.

The feelings they give me, echo the days before.
Although in my head that day seems an eternity and more.
The more days I look back on, the more life seems to quickly slip and fade through night and day.
And I awaken each morning... a new person, a new way.

I take them everywhere I go, there can be only numbing.
But no matter how far you go, there is no running.
For these are the things that are your becoming.

(Apologies if my overuse of ........ annoys any grammar nazis)
The same colour blood just pass through our veins and tears taste the same when they splash on your face. Cant separate and still carry the weight, gotta heal get away from the fear and the hate. Gotta shake free from them chains.

Old Men Walking

The old-time buddies
walk each day
sharing time and a bit of talk

I’m slightly younger
and walk alone
we exchange greetings of the day

As I come up behind
I edge over to pass
when a bare-chested jogger appears

His perfect pecs
and six-pack abs
on view for all to see

The oldster in the Navy cap
says something to the rest,
which draws guffaws and grins

As I pass I tell them, that I could do that too
except of course it would result
in massive man-boob lust

How Many?

As far as our meager human senses
can see, hear and sense the universe
may as well be infinite

Even with our best instruments
with our brightest minds
we can only know parts of it

We look back eleven billion years
and see the beginnings of galaxies

We scan the skies and record the
cold, cold, cosmic background radiation

Our best calculations tell us the universe
is thirteen point eight billion years old

That is the limit of our seeing, yet the universe
is wider, further, deeper than we can know

We have existed as sentient beings on this Earth
for only a few thousand of those billions of years

We scan the sky,
we broadcast our signals
We listen, but all is quiet

How many galactic civilizations
have lived and died screaming out
into the inky black silence of space?

I coulda swore there was a poetry thread already....but yes I'm a poet with a couple of collections published and a few dozen in various publications.

Here's one I just wrote....as always, subject to revision:

A Shared Perspective

Armageddon is coming
You can see it in their eyes

Driven by disparate beliefs
regardless of what is best

Atomic weapons for Alla
Cruise missiles guided by God

The oppressors shall die
The infidels perish

for truth and justice
are ours

As you may know (or not) we've had tremendous flooding here in Colorado. Utah Park near my house in fact flooded, many houses were damaged along the drainage canal and in the area (I and my house is unscathed). Peoria Street which runs beside the park is still closed and under repair though the park itself is pretty much back to normal water levels in pond, etc.

Here is one from my collection The Poet of Utah Park:

The Wolf Pack of Utah Park

You hear her wicked witch voice
from somewhere across the park

You can’t see them at all but you know they are near
The Wolf Pack of Utah Park

Your heart skips a beat, anxiety rises
you wish to turn around

The wild Pomeranians, the evil Chihuahuas
the vicious Terrier -- leader of the pack

A poor li’l hunched over man in her evil thrall
does his best to manage three of the wicked brood

but they move like chaos across the walk
they are everywhere at once

As you try to pass she flashes her evil and deadly smile
the Pomeranian nips your ankles, the poodle pisses on your feet

You hear her cackles fade, as you hurry to distance yourself
once again, for one more day, from the Wolf Pack of Utah Park

Another from The Poet of Utah Park:

How Seeds Learned to Fly

They were taught by their mothers
but first they had to get there
all that way
up on high

The climb from primordial oceans
was not an easy feat
billions of years of trial and error
victory and defeat

all to give a final push
of seedling breaking free
floating downward like snowflakes
from the mighty cottonwood trees

I stop for a moment in wonder
astonished by nature’s game
imagine myself in a snow globe
as beauty dances ‘round me
