I love titles Matt. They are generally the thing that comes to me first or the thing that gels or clarifies a poem, story, etc.

I have tons of them written in my journals which I'll probably never be able to do justice to. :(

Entitlement

There was a time when
men would give anything
to work an extra shift
to earn that extra pay.

Today they complain
about working the extra
shift because of
the holiday shoppers

They hire someone
to mow their lawn
to clean their carpet
to put up their Christmas lights

Stillborn

The conditions were right
Water, sulfur, carbon and light
but something was wrong
the core stopped spinning
no magnetic arms to wrap themselves
‘round the planet’s nascent life.

So the solar wind in Hesperian days
stripped the air and water away
leaving newborn life
gasping and dying
on the rust-red surface below.

Surreal Christmas

Son #2 is an Alaska State Trooper
who works the swing shift so I wait ‘til late
on Christmas day to give him a call.

I’ve saved the presents
thinking I’d do a live unwrapping
when we talked on that day.

I get no answer when I call
but leave a message on his cell
for him to call when he can.

Within the hour I get his call
we exchange greetings
of the day

He thanks me for my presents
says he’d opened them early
before Christmas Dinner with friends

but then got called in early
to work an accident
on the Sterling Highway.

So he couldn’t answer
my earlier call and I ask
if I should call back

Oh no he says the time is good
he’s just waiting with a dead guy
for the ambulance to arrive.

I’m taken aback,
this is no time
to be opening Christmas presents

He assures me it's fine
so I open presents and thank my son
with a dead guy by the road.

Not much activity 'round here, but here's a new one:

Deniers

I ask that those
who distrust science,
those that rail against
climate warming,
those that refuse to
vaccinate their children
and those that deny
evolution or the age
of the Earth, to immediately
give up their TVs, their radios,
their computers and electric
lights and return
themselves to the darkness
to live as their hunter-
gatherer ancestors did and
to pray for forgiveness.

Kenny, those are wonderful poems.

I have done a series of poems that were inspired by my love for Chinese and Buddhist culture, they were written (more or less) from the perspective of Fusu, the son of the first Chinese emperor Qinshihuang. There are a few samples here.

The Diary of Prince Fusu XVIII

Remembrance stinging more when hazy:
Like this foggy spring morning clinging to Winter
Slapping my cheeks with months old crusts of snow
Torn from the mountain side by this maddening wind -

This wind is crazy! It never even noticed
Its General, Dread Warlord Winter, has routed
From the forces of spring, and it fights on,
Alone, yet fearless and oblivious –
Like some cold-hearted King, trying to impart some final lesson
To his son, the youthful Prince; this will not last.
Even as winter goes and spring arrives, your heart shall harden
Your hands, your life story, will get stained,
Like the women giving birth, so you shall bring death.

That father’s just a memory now
Yet even the wind still carries his voice.

Look beyond me.

Will you care to look beyond,
beyond my shroud of mystery?
Beyond that expressionless facade,
Beyond that restrictive veil of doubt,
Can you see the depths of anguish
That mark my sad penury?

Will you care to speak so I can hear,
partake in your melody
help me see, sans all fear
what you really meant to be?
Will you take my hand and care to ask
what I'd like and what I'd want?

Some of us live in darkness shrouded,
Some of us have our spirits caged
Some of us have our wings clipped
Minds molested and bodies broken.
Go on me love, go on and probe,
Go on and look, look for me.

For I am lost, for I am trapped
in cages with bars only I can see.
I am encumbered, with cynical mistrust
and pestered by gremlins and punctured by pins.
All I ask for is to then be unshackled,
and to be me, and to be free.

Wave or Particle?

Oh to be a photon
traveling at the speed of light
nothing but a wave to you
as I disappear from sight.

The Consequences of Long-Term Furniture Ownership

My kitchen table talks to me.
It tells me secrets as I walk past.
We’ve been together for almost
a quarter of a century.

One would think that in that
time we would become close,
perhaps even intimate.

New Poem on my Blog:

In the Night

Every night Orion rises,
its vulgar Van Gogh stars
screaming out my name,
forcing me outside,
to look up, to open my eyes
and be blinded once again.

A small contribution to this thread--

Spellbound.

Shaggy Shetlands cleave together
Thick carpet rumps held to the wind,
Sturdy beasts with patient eyes
Of chocolate brown.
A hazy, pastel rainbow arcs
Across the vision, merging into
Slatey clouds of silent menace
Which rule the sky.
Now sleet is slicing down to earth.
It strikes the glass with force, and startles,
But melts once more in sunshine,
Tepid, pale.

Four wheels bump and grind across
Alarming causeway of hewn stone,
Rocky, isolated pathway
To meditation.
Choppy, froth-topped, dancing waves
Jig and swirl to music mute,
They fuse and part, are ever faithful
To Nature's tune.

In middle distance there appears
A leafy copse of evergreens,
A haven for the feathered harbingers
Of promised Spring.
Remote horizon of youthful days-
Carefree days of hope and love-
Is broken by a sheer cliff face,
Majestic, high.

A solitary gull drifts by,
Grey and white like sea beneath,
It floats, it rises, falls at will,
Survives alone.
It holds a special fascination,
Symbol of power to overcome
The vagrant wind,the stormy sea,
Focused, aloof.

The watcher soon feels hesitation
To encroach on Nature more
But no such reticence obstructs
The next intruder.
The droning of a helicopter
Burts upon the ancient scene,
Persistent in its whirling flights
Across the sky.
Then strangers in a red-box car
Creep along the rugged road,
And, as they pass, they smile and wave
But do not stay.

Crofts lie dotted round about,
Cosy families lodged within,
Sheep and cattle crop the grass,
Luscious and green.
They eat their fill, are unaware,
Happily, they cannot know
That they are nurtured for their gifts
Of flesh or fleece.

And so the spell is broken now,
The magic of the hour has passed.
The scene dissolves, the watcher leaves
For man-made home.
Necessity, conditioning
Drive the wheels inland again,
But Memory holds, fast and sure,
The time spent by the bay.

19th March, 2006.

Damnit how many times does this have to happen before someone wises up and creates a fail-safe? This is the third time this millennium that the subspace signals got delayed and the transports collided in the wormhole. This time three new universes were created. God!

Yes that is the whole flash fiction/prose poem, also on my Mansions of the Mind Blog:

In honor of Bukowski's Birthday (8/16/1920) one of mine that he inspired and is include in my The Poet of Utah Park collection:

What Bukowski Thought

Red wheelbarrow my ass
I’ll glaze your friggin’ chickens
-- with peanut sauce
in my red-hot oven.

I guess it's true what the New York Times said, "Poetry is Dead"

Protractor

The Ruler measured, slapped,
defined and ruled over
all his subjects and kingdom.

He paced his domain in measured steps
always doling out what to him was
fair and impartial judgment.

Still there was discontent in the land.
There were those who mumbled
under their breath, ‘Yardstick!’

Some of those gathered
in a conclave,
began a movement.

They focused on an emergent contender
in hopes of replacing the Ruler with one
who had a better angle on the situation.
