District 9 was fantastic.

The Wickus character made the film. A somewhat annoying, rather incompetent jobsworth at the start, more or less impossible to find any affinity with forced into a situation where he finds compassion and understanding through mutual reliance with the "shrimps".

Also, it has flying pigs.

Favourite movie of 2009.

Only thing though, when I bought the DVD they'd stuffed up the subtitles so you have to have the subtitles on for everything, even when they're speaking English. It's a real drag.

Maybe they got it right on the Blu-Ray release but I won't hold my breath.

When were they speaking English, please?

I may be a little biased, but yes, watch it! It's good!

Yep, everybody who's into scifi should watch this baby, I would say

It's massively well made (no surprise there since the effects are by WETA but it's still a bit of a milestone in merging CGI with the real world stuff I'd say) and entertaining while there's apparently actually very subtle social commentary going on in it too. I thought it a bit heavy handed actually but I'm told it's because I missed most of the little cues put therein. One might really want to brush up on one's Apartheid knowledge before watching, or else just cheat and read some on-line analysis on the subject.

If you can over look the surprisingly baffling ending you should definitely watch it.
Its really funny satire with great effects and good action.

But that ending :?

Problem? The irony factor was high, the man who was oppressing the prawns becomes one, and facilitates their escape from the hands of the corporate exploiters.

Well that wasn't the part that bugged me...

...it was after spending...11 or whatever...years gathering fuel to power the ship they would escape on the alien guy just gets the mothership to beam him up. WTF!?

Er, I'd recommend a separate thread for discussing the content of the film, in case fretmeister reads something he doesn't want to.

That's all I have to say on it.
I liked everything but that. And I spoilered it.

All good. My comment was directed more at Gawdzilla's comment about the plot. I didn't even know that much when I went in to see the film, so even that little comment could have changed my experience.

I'm getting confused :whine:

Don't know about any spoilers. Maybe I didn't watch it up to the very end -- was there something happening after or in the middle of the end credits?

Ok, I'm a hypocrite for discussing the film in this thread... but...
(fretmeister... don't click on these spoilers or even try quoting these posts :hand: )
I think it could be argued that the fuel that was collected over those years was required to fuel the journey of the mother-ship back to the home world, whereas simply moving the mother-ship and beaming up the command module didn't require such an extensive fuel source. Maybe that fuel was specifically for the ftl drive. :dunno: Just my thoughts on the matter.
