...it was after spending...11 or whatever...years gathering fuel to power the ship they would escape on the alien guy just gets the mothership to beam him up. WTF!?

Ok, I'm a hypocrite for discussing the film in this thread... but...
(fretmeister... don't click on these spoilers or even try quoting these posts :hand: )
I think it could be argued that the fuel that was collected over those years was required to fuel the journey of the mother-ship back to the home world, whereas simply moving the mother-ship and beaming up the command module didn't require such an extensive fuel source. Maybe that fuel was specifically for the ftl drive. :dunno: Just my thoughts on the matter.

[Reveal] Spoiler:
It was quite clear when they put the fuel in the grounded ship I thought. Why couldn't the mother ship just beam them up individually and leave a few behind to gather fuel?

That's true. Although the command module may function as the repository for the fuel and then once linked to the mother-ship the fuel would be reallocated to where it's needed. I really don't know.
I'm sure the film could have gone a number of different ways, but I actually like the fact that you could imagine different solutions to the problems that the aliens faced in the film; because it suggests that the aliens don't think like us. Perhaps they don't think about the best way to get home. They were, after all, like hive workers without leadership or initiative, so the absence of a more cohesive 'get home' plan makes some sense.

Sorry for turning this thread into a spoiler riddled thread. :silenced:

I got the impression that the shrimps managing to activate the command module also activated some fail-safe system in the mothership...

Maybe it's just too much "fan-boy chalking off the weak points in the plot" tho. I don't think this was nearly as bad a chalk sink as most scifi films tho

District 9 is a fuckin ace film, and hugely quotable.

"Don't point those fokken tentacles at me!"

"I did not have pornographic relations with that creature!"

And the alien mecha-suit is a wonderful thing - look closely in the climactic finale, and you'll see it levitate a pig and blast it at the baddies.

I like shrimp. Who here likes shrimp?
