The author looks a bit like Konrad Lorenz. Jeez! That conjured in my mind an image of you brothers following him like the ducks! :rofl:

I was incredibly lucky to find a signed book by Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, better known as Le Corbusier, in a book for urban planners called Towards a New Architecture. Found it by chance in NYC in the Village in 1974 and am so happy the store owner didn't know how special this was.

I've not been that bothered about autographs since they introduced chip-n-pin. I gave away my signed copy of The Sign of Four a few months back.

It isn't really of interest to me. The value is in the ideas presented, and the monetary value is neither here nor there, not least because I tend to keep books once I've bought them.

Also there's a sense of personal contact by the author.

That's the bit I don't get. Smacks of celebrity culture to me, and I haven't the least interest in that.

And getting a book signed may be an excuse for a quick chatette with the author (see the queues at Dawkins' signings!).

I could see that, but it isn't likely that you're going to get anything of any depth at a book signing.

I've a copy of October Surprise with an inscription to the book's previous owner by Barbara Honegger.

Purchased at an estate sale - wasn't looking for the autograph, but looked a little closer when her business card fell out.

Years ago I bought a copy of Iain Banks' "The Business" from a charity shop for 75p. When I got it home and opened it up I found;

It looks similar to sigs I've found on t'internet, but most probably a bored shop assistant did it!

The one that got away...

In one of my favorite secondhand bookshops, I came across the catalog of the great Alberto Giacometti retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC. This exhibition was held very near the end of Giacometti's life. Lovely hardbound book, not too big, unpretentious, but with good reproductions. And Giacometti is one of my favorite artists. The price was around $20 - not too bad. But this isn't such a hard book to find, and I thought I could get it cheaper elsewhere.

Then I glanced at the title page. In the corner was written in pencil the letters "AG". I stupidly didn't think much of it, and even more stupidly didn't buy the book. At home the next day I did a bit of research and found samples of Giacometti's handwriting. It was clear that the letters were his initials, written in his own hand. And I remembered that Giacometti had, in fact, been briefly in New York in 1965, around the time of that exhibition.

I immediately went back to the bookshop. Evidently somebody had realized what they possessed: the book had been moved to the rare book department, the price increased to many hundreds of dollars, and someone had bought it earlier that day.

Damn. Damn. Damn.
