Silly patronising words in otherwise great songs.

#1  Postby james1v » Apr 26, 2010 12:20 am

Just listening to one of my all time favourite musical artists, Paul Weller, singing "Going Places". Now, while i love the song... He says in the lyrics "come to my side child"...How patronising! I'm assuming the song is about a lover, not a child.
(Or am i totally wrong about the songs subject? Its easy to find on YouTube.)

Has anyone else got any examples of patronising bollocks in otherwise great songs?

I like the music and vocals on Cat Stevens' Wild World, but some of the lyrics... just about all of them come off so damn patronising it's disgusting. No wonder that girl woman left him, he was halfway to being a Taliban even back then.

The beautiful 'In the Garden' by Van Morrison has, '...and we felt the presence of the Christ within our hearts' in it. And a few other clangers.

I know, I shouldn't be surprised, and he is granted poetic, mystical licensce (locally at least), but.......well, to me, it's a disappointing contradiction to the great sentiment 'no guru, no method, no teacher, just you and I and nature' which is in the same song (in fact the title of the album is 'No guru, no method, no teacher').

Slightly confused, Van?

Steve Cradock from Ocean Colour Scene, his first solo album is great...... apart from one line in the song Keep Trying.
God is love and love is God.
Makes me cringe every time I hear it.

You can't handle being told you can't handle it?

On a similar note, I went round to MC Hammer's house the other day, but I felt uncomfortable and left pretty quickly. He wouldn't let me touch anything.

I just think it's very presumptuous.

If you're thinking about the same song that the line conjures in my head, I don't foresee you, or anybody else, having any trouble handling it. There's a slim chance that someone might die out of sheer boredom, but that's about it.

I don't think you're ready for this jelly.
She battled through in every kind of tribulation,
She revelled in adventure and imagination.
She never listened to no hater, liar,
Breaking boundaries and chasing fire.
Oh, my my! Oh my, she flies!

Fuck it. I'm not into chocolate jelly. I prefer vanilla scoops.

I don't know the name of it, but they played some country song on the radio the other week about some kid raised by atheists who ended up killing each other, and Jesus was behind the couch or some shit, and by fuck it was terrible! Anyone know what it's called?

Wow, I didn't realise before reading those lyrics that I was not living up to the atheist code of conduct. I'll start a downward spiral of drugs, alcohol and abuse that will eventually lead to a murder suicide right away. I'm so sorry I've been lax in my atheistic duties. How presumptuous of me to lead a generally wholesome and ethical life.
