Songs You Love From Genres You Hate

#1  Postby vivaldian67 » Mar 07, 2010 1:46 am

I'm sure all of us have certain genres of music that we generally can't abide, yet there always seems to be a few songs in those genres that stand out.

Take Country...please, take it, far away...I fucking hate Country: maudlin, cheesy, redneck-infested sewage, all of it. Except for these two which I absolutely adore:

Anyone else got any genre-defying pieces of musical excellence they want to share?

Wow! This is easily the best music-related question that this commentator has ever come across. Seriously.

For me, it has to be Mozart. I detest opera, which is the triumph of technique over soul (musical sense), but there is one aria, The Marriage of Figaro: Act III Scene 10: Duettino - Sull'aria, that simply transcends genre. Regular viewers will recognise it as the aria played over the tannoy by Andy Dufresne in The Shawshank Redemption.

I hate "country" music, even Norwegian country. But I like "Ring of Fire."

I dunno, I don't really hate genres as such, because a good song is a good song, and the genre is usually just down to the production. And most music in most genres is pretty average to be fair. I suppose some genres are more annoying when they're shit, whereas crap R&B or indie just kinda fades into the background. There are certain genres I've never really got into, I suppose, although that's mainly because I've never tried. Jazz is one (I'll buy Kind of Blue eventually), although this is a favourite on my MP3 player:

Country is another, although I've seen a bit of bluegrass and that looks a bit more interesting than the shit you see on TV depictions of country music. But I haven't listened to enough to post anything.

One genre I don't tend to like is proper trance and house music, although there is the odd song, like this one:

Like I said, if the song is good enough, it makes not a shite of difference.

And I hate everything that modern gangsta rap stands for, but there is one song that gets me every time:

I think that might have more to do with the film though (despite also hating everything that Tom Cruise stands for).

You said it, a one man genre worthy of all the detestation you can throw at it.

Another genre I generally detest is Heavy Metal - long-haired wanky twats trying to act all tough when most of them couldn't knock the skin off a rice pudding, playing ridiculously twiddly guitar solos that are incredibly hard to play, but musically simplistic shite. Holger Czukay, bass player from Krautrock legends Can, once said that the reason Heavy Metal guitarists play so many notes is because they don't which is the right one, and I think that just about sums it up.

Except for these two which are ace:

I'd go further. Genre is a tool of the marketing men, and nothing more.

I can't say that I hate any genre, but there are some genres I don't care for much, like heavy metal. I like a few songs from Motorhead, Black Sabbath, and Metallica's a guilty pleasure, but that's about it... unless you count stuff like Tool.

I like country, but not usuaully pop/mainstream country, but I do like a few songs from a few artists in that genre like Reba, Martina McBride, and a few others.

With rap, I like some of the indie stuff, and the 90's stuff, but most of the "music" is horrible and uninspired.

I went to watch a Metallica tribute band a while back, and tbh, they're not my favourite band in the world, but I do love this song:

Of course they didn't play it.

Yeah I've never got opera. The whole premise seems to be, "it's difficult, therefore it's good." Which also seems to be the premise for ballet, while I'm at it.

I agree about Faithless, I saw him do Insomnia at a music festival and was blown away by it, its one of my top 10 festival moments

I've always thought the same about heavy metal - all those guitar solos - hard as fuck to play, but so what?

I've had a long and abiding hatred of "Top 40" music, most especially female pop singers. Britney Spears, Debbie Gibson and Olivia Newton-John cause my brain to implode.

Then along came Pink and Lady Gaga and all of a sudden, pop music became fun again.

Love Story by Taylor Swift! She's country-pop. I hate country music, but I LOVE this song because it's like a fairy tale!

Only Orff's Carmina Burana is not opera, just a set of medieval poems set to music ;) -- but I love it too.

This is another interpretation of "O Fortuna", by a German band called Estampie (totally worth checking out)

I'm too much of a musical ecclectic to have a hated genre, I'm afraid, so I'll just include an excuse for the little OT.

I'm the same way with pop country. I hate it, but I like a few of them like Steel Magnolia (The girl used to ride my bus.), Reba, and Martina McBride.

I find it hard to hate a "genre"

And no offense to OP, but the across the board country hate is borne of ignorance, seems to me. People write it all off because of the garbage they hear on the radio, when country has been around for quite awhile and there's a load of it that's great that I'm willing to bet most people who immediately say they hate all country haven't even heard (of) before.
