#1 2001-A Space Odyssey.

That film should top every list - if for nothing else than the amazing cinematography and attention to detail.

Should Sherlock Holmes be sci-fi? I thought he was a Victorian detective. As for the top ten, Alien has to be up there (much better than any others you've listed), the first (oldest) Star Wars trilogy, 2001 A Space Oddysey, Bladerunner, the original Planet of the Apes, and I suppose Jurassic Park counts as sci-fi. The frist of The Matrix might be up there, & Brazil certainly should be.

Fantasy/Magic, well the LotR trilogy, The Dark Crystal, Time Bandits (simply superb), and yes, the Underword series (anything with Kate Beckinsale dressed in leather gear has to be good)

cavarka9, are you changing the opening post in response to the replies? I'd rather you didn't, personally. It makes the thread difficult to follow.

As 2001 has been mentioned, I think A Clockwork Orange should also be considered.

An honorable mention for sci-fi should also go to the film Moon.

Tough to pick just 10, there is a lot of good stuff out there

2001
LOTR
The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951 version, not that Keanu dreck)
When Worlds Collide (1951 version, there's a new one in production that might be watchable)
Solaris (Tarkovskiy's '72 version, though the 2002 one with George Clooney is OK)
Silent Running
Enemy Mine
Blade Runner
District 9
A Boy and His Dog
Close Encounters

Then there's the ones that are hard to classify, like A Clockwork Orange. One of the best films, ever, IMO. More a distopian fantasy than traditional sci fi, though. And The Shining (Nicholson version), more horror than sci fi, but bloody brilliant.

That leaves out so many, like Star Wars, Star Trek II, Forbidden Planet, Metropolis, ET, Alien, Aliens, Terminator, The Matrix and a lot of others.

Damn, I'm inspired now. I'm hitting Netflix and ordering some DVDs.

Most excellent with some fine acid.

That reminds me - how could I forget Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure?
