I just saw the opening statements. As a deist (small d), I personally accept the probability that there is a deity, but I do not subscribe exclusively to any one religion. In viewing the opening statements, I feel that Hitchens does much better in arguing the atheist case than Blair does the theist one. So far, Hitchens is winning hands down. Modesty aside, I could argue the theist case far better -- and more honestly -- than Blair with one hand tied behind my back. So far, in the opening statements, Hitchens blows Blair out of the water.
One thing that Blair does that is particularly dishonest and in fact hateful -- and others on his side have argued the same -- is to bring up the tired old accusation that Nazism was an atheist regime. This is bullshit. Hitlerism was revived paganism of a sort, though with a nod to Jesus, but not in the context of traditional Christian orthodoxy. Unfortunately, no matter how often readers like me and (I'm sure) others on this board repeat that Hitlerism and atheism have nothing to do with each other, ignoramuses like Blair will continue to peddle this lie, either out of laziness or out of something far worse. Anyone who's going to argue his case in public owes at least enough respect to his audience to carefully double-check everything he will say. Blair came out with this blatantly unresearched piece of urban legend crap in his opening
written statement. He had plenty of time to vet his remarks. He obviously didn't do that, or chose to recklessly disregard facts altogether. He's lost my respect right out of the box. I don't see why I should watch a two-hour debate when one of the debaters insults the audience by offering half-baked remarks that show not a scintilla of self-respecting historical rigor. No thanks.
