Do you like WW2 games? MMOs? Battleground Europe now ftp

#1  Postby Rome Existed » Aug 12, 2012 8:02 am

http://www.battlegroundeurope.com/

The game first came out in 2001 so it's quite an old game. However, it's always been updated.

You can be either the Allies (UK, France or USA) or the Axis (Germany) and play in each side's Army, Airforce or Navy.

No skill trees. A recruit in their first mission can kill someone who has been playing for years.

No Garands +10dmg. Everyone gets the same weapons (well, you have to rank up to get higher weapons but they're not better just because you are higher rank).

I remember trying this game years ago. It seemed like a real mess back then.

I remember spawning over and over as a French soldier with an AT gun, trying to kill some tank that was spawn camping our barracks. There must have been around 10 of us trying to kill this tank, and we were all just dying over and over. The game was laggy as hell and I couldn't tell if the one shot I got off before dying was even hitting the tank. It seemed like it was poorly designed if that kind of spawn camping was possible.

I do like the idea of it, though. Maybe the game plays a lot better now.

Sounds like an accurate account of the French war effort. :coffee:

Any game that has spawning is going to have some form of spawn camping.

RE, as someone who has wasted way too much of his youth playing first person shooters, I know what you mean. I don't have a problem with spawn camping. I do have a problem if someone is spawn camping and there is nothing anyone can do about it. This tank was sitting by itself in a field, not even moving, and just blowing a lot of noobs away.

Take Battlefield 1942, for example. People used to spawncamp in tanks all the time. They'd get a lot of kills, but eventually someone would sneak up behind it and plant a pipe bomb on it. This game, it seemed like there was nothing the majority of us could do, as the only thing we had access to was an AT gun that apparently had no effect against it.

This, combined with crappy graphics and laggy play, really turned me off to the game. This was 8 years ago or so, though, so maybe it is a better game now. Do you play it much?

Just got back into it after not playing much this year.

The game has changed a lot in 8 years.

If you're getting camped by a tank there's not much you can do apart from spawn elsewhere and try and sneak up on it. It is a tank afterall.

Here's a few random shots from the game over the last couple of days.

When you last played it it probably looked more like this:

Yeah, that last screen was what it looked like. It looks pretty decent now.
When I get time, I'll download it and give it a shot.
What times do you usually play?

Um, when I feel like it.

There is still lag though, depending on what you mean.

I'm in Australia. On a good day my latency is about 250ms to 300ms. Get someone else with similar latency and when I shoot them, or vice versa, it's gonna take a good fraction of a second for that to happen on the screen. It gives the appearance of bullets going around corners in CQB. No real way around it except to play a LAN game instead.

Another big change since you last would have played is that towns no longer have equipment. There are divisions, with brigades, and their air and naval equiv. in the game. Equipment is tied to them. Brigades and divisions can also be lost if they are cut off from their own lines and the towns they are in are taken.

Equipment can be depleted and battles lost due to one side being attritted more than the other. There are also infantry and armour divisions which can result in some interesting match ups.

It's been so long since I've played that I can't remember how it worked. I remember driving a truck around and getting too close to the front and getting blown up. I think it wasn't a big deal because there were unlimited trucks. Is that no longer the case?

I also seem to remember piloting a bomber, but that might have been a different game...

Everything is limited now.

And yeah, you can fly bombers.

I use a 3 year old laptop. I never have trouble running games on it, though of course I don't get the greatest frame rate playing graphically intense games. Occasionally, I install a game and it doesn't immediately work, but then I easily find a fix on the game's forum. That wasn't the case with this game, though.

Best experience I've ever had playing a computer game. Subscribed for seven years and will re-subscribe when I get around to upgrading my PC.
