I imagine there will be a slow drip feed that gains momentum. There were Unknown Artefacts discovered last year which pointed towards Merope. Then there was the system failures at stations, Obsidian Station was then "cured" by meta alloys dropped by the barnacles.

FD have dropped hints that how the community reacts to situation will influence how events unfold. My worry is that Obsidian will start spouting spires and barnacles soon.

Apparently people have been shooting at the barnacles to "see what happens."

Which further down the line is going to make the question "why are the Thargoids hostile" really rather moot.

I think war is pretty inevitable, the devs have dropped hints out that peace with the Thargoids is unlikely to be lasting in the long term.

Apparently they drop goodies. Fuck the Thargoids. They shouldn't have left their shit unattended.

The question is does it still count as illicit cargo? I've never had anything to do with slavery in the game, I imagine having to leave the life support on makes it slightly more hassle to smuggle.

In other news, I saw a rescue in progress at a Salvage Site. An Asp with a unique paint job was picking up escape pods and black boxes. Got really twitchy when I scanned him.

It was a gag. From what I've read, he had both in his cargo, just swapped out the filters to only show slaves, then only animal meat.

Ahh...

I thought I had read something about the effect of switching off life support on cargo somewhere before, must be misremembering the details.

Had a look at the black hole in Maia last night. The gravitational lensing of the nebula was a trip. I have to admit I cued up Black Hole Sun as my soundtrack for the way out there. That whole system is full of interesting stuff to look at. From tiny planetoids mega meters away from each other, to landable high metal green planets, and simply flying through the nebula.

Switching to two ships and specialising the builds for exploration and combat is one of the best decisions I've made in the game. I've been flying in solo out near Maia though due to the griefing, I have risked a couple of times in open just to see what folk are up to near the barnacle, typically not much, but there is a novelty in seeing so many players in the one place.

I came across a supernova remnant on my way to the Heart and Soul nebulas the other day. Spectacular bell shaped nebula with a black hole in the center. I wasn't expecting it. Just noticed a blue dot in the sky and navigated towards it until it dominated the sky. I'll post pics later.

I just tried to land on a 3.3G world after flying on low grav planets looking for barnacles. I was in a Cobra fitted for speed and maneuverability and I could just keep her in the air. I'm still learning the flight mechanics in this game, it's incredible.

I tried to land on a high G planet in my previous outing and bounced hard. I had to return home with 4% hull integrity :(

I now take it VERY slow on anything greater than 1G.

I love the fact that the SRV handles very differently depending on the gravity and type of surface too.

I'm in the process of outfitting an Asp for long range exploration. AFMU, Heat Sink Launcher, high rated Fuel Scoop, Vehicle Hanger, the usual scanners. D rate everything other than the FSD. Is there much point in keeping a cargo hold, I know there is stuff to pick up out there but it hardly seems worth it. I was tempted to fit an extra fuel tank, but with the a high rated scoop and the hit to jump range it seems counterproductive.

Any other considerations for deep space? I know that you can’t repair the hull in space, but you can now repair the canopy. Fly careful especially when scooping, and only heat sink in a dire emergency as you can’t reload or synthesize more.

I haven't figured out the use for a Heat Sink Launcher. I hope I don't either lol. I don't fit one nor any weapons. I have a couple of Shield Boosters and that's it for external hard points. Shield boosters are a must if you plan on landing on high G planets. If you bounce hard it could be the difference between ending the trip early due to massive hull damage or waking up back in the bubble with nothing to show for it other than a quick return and a stiff insurance deductible.

I don't have any cargo holds either. Once you fill it in deep space, that's it. It has a maximum return on each trip that you can't exceed. The further you go out into deep space, the less relative value it contributes. I'd rather use that space for something more useful, like SRV redundancy.

There is a bug with SRVs where they will take massive phantom damage for no apparent reason. I've lost two so far to it so I would at the very least take 2 with you if you plan on going out further than 2000 lys. If you are going further than 10000 lys out I would invest in the 4 SRV bay, which I'm considering when I next return to the bubble.

I do equip the AFMU and have even had to use it after taking some heat damage once. It's so easy to keep it supplied as long as you still have working SRVs to collect the resources.

No need for extra fuel tank. I scoop on the run and at every opportunity. Very rarely have I found myself deviating from my route to search for scoopables. But then that may be dependent on where you explore.

Currently my Asp Explorer is just slightly above 30ly jump range.

I haven't used mine since I got a 4A fuel scoop. No serious heat scares since I was in a Sidewinder/improved my scooping technique. It's one of those "don't need it till you need it things." I'll fit some boosters on your advice, and get a 2 bay hanger for the SRV.

I do equip the AFMU and have even had to use it after taking some heat damage once.

And there in lies the reason for the Heat Sink Launcher. The AFMU and synthesis does make it somewhat redundant, and you would have to have some horrible luck for it to actually save you, but honestly stellar accidents terrify me.

It was due to a brain fart and I couldn't roll down the window.

But It seems the damage to the hull wasn't significant enough to worry about. The components on the other hand did take a significant hit, but the materials were pretty easy to find.

Not to add to your fear of stellar accidents but this video will certainly do that :D

I was aware that could happen having found a few binary stars with that sort of proximity, but I had never actually witnessed it.

I misread the rewards for the community challenge, so I have less credits than I thought. It'll be some time before my Asp is long range worthy. What's the deal with the standard scanners on the Asp, are there any D rated one? The only upgrade I've found has a ludicrous weight.

I only just found out you can take 4K screen shots in solo. That explains why your shots are sharper than mine!
