Steam is a gaming interface that rips off the game owners when you join a game. They even have special "Steam" editions.

How does it rip off the game owners when you join a game? I've never once been ripped off when I joined a game.

If I'm playing a game on Steam then I own the game so I am the game owner. So either my question still stands, or what exactly do you mean by game owner?

Do you? You have a copy of the game but you have to play through Steam. If you play MMOG you are not the owner and the owners are charged for everyone joining the game.

Yes, if I paid for a copy of the game, I do own that copy of that game, so I can play that copy of that game. How exactly do you get charged if I play-through steam- a game that you also own? That's the part I'm confused about.

Seems impossible but I'm more confused now than I was before I asked for an explanation!

It's owned by Valve, the dudes who made the Half Life and Portal games. And Team Fortress 2.

It's basically a store-front where you can buy games, as well as a copy protection, multiplayer matchmaking and chat programme, all rolled into one. You have an account there, like you would here, and every game you buy there is tied to that account. Exactly the kind of stuff you'd think the discerning consumer would hate, but Steam made a reputation for having regular sale events where games new and old go dirt cheap.

It is about the least offensive DRM there can be, devs can even choose to not use the inbuilt DRM if they want.

Who knows what the fuck Scot Dutchy is going on about, no one is forced to put their game up on Steam. No one is being ripped off, Steam doesn't control prices they do take a small cut off any price that is not 0 just like a real store would. Many F2P like being on Steam since it opens them up to a large base of potential customers who just might end up actually buying some of the crap they sell and thus fund the game for a bit longer for those who refuse to pay.

For a mod you are very insulting. I have complained about your attitude towards me but of course being a mod it never gets anywhere.
I have been on games mainly MMOG ones where many including the owners complained bitterly about Steam. Because it has such a large user base it is very difficult to ignore it if you want to promote your game. It is not a small cut off price but of course you are the big expert.

It's 30% of the price Valve takes. I don't know of any other digital storefronts that take less. Well, the Humble Store does, in a way. They also take a 30% cut, but a part of that goes to charity.

Just looked it up Steam takes 30 to 40 percent in sales. Brick and mortar store was a bit harder to find but it was around 30 percent but with a lot more costs on top of that. So the big bad Steam is no worse than selling in a real store and possibly far better with the lack of distribution and box/disc creation costs. That is facts for you Scot Dutchy.

Obviously the MMOs you are talking about for all their supposed whining understand that the large customer base far outweighs any loses. Of course they could just sell their F2P packs that cost actual money on their own store or in game and only have the F2P part up on Steam and not give them any money at all.
