It actually is really user-friendly. Been playing it for more than a year now (with breaks). You don't really need to spend money on it, to be honest. I haven't anyway and I can do everything anyone else can do. The stuff you can buy with real money only is basically just cosmetics. Skins for champions and stuff.
Basically there are two currencies RP (Riot points, after the company) and IP (Influence points). RP you can buy for money, and you can spend them on champions (heroes you can play in the game), skins (skins for those champions), runes (little buffs you can permanently attach to your profile in any constellation you want) and some other minor boni, like rune pages. (One rune page is basically one rune template you can save, so you don't hae to change it every other game.)
IP you earn by just playing (winning a game obviously earns you more than losing one, but you manage anyway). IP you can spend on all of the above except skins. Visual costumisation is really the only thing you lack if you don't spend money. (No, I'm not kidding.)

Edit: I have to add: Obviously, the IP (you can get for just playing) are worth less than the RP you can just buy, relatively speaking, but you still get to see everything you possibly could without spending a single cent. (That reminds me: Mention me in your referals.)
It's not that you need to play for months to buy stuff with your free IP (you can buy new stuff every other day) but RP are easier to earn, if you are willing to spend money.
That said, RP are worth fuck all, to be honest. Factoring in an average monthly salary in Europe they are fucking expensive. The cheapest thing you can buy with RP is about 3600 RP (I seem to remember) which comes down to about 5€. All you get is a bloody skin. Obviously you can only buy 3500€ for 5€ (not quite enough for the cheapest stuff) or ~8000 RP at 10€ (not quite enough for two things), so that might count as a scam. You have to at least send twice as much as planned to get anywhere.
That said, with the IP you get for free, you don't have to take those hurdles. It takes a bit longer to get them, since you "work" for them while having fun playing, but you eventually get there.

Three, if you count the map used in the tutorial. And there is a new one in the making.
It doesn't sound like a lot, but considering that DotA is alive and kicking after nearly ten years on only one map... To me, attaining perfect knowledge of the map is part of the appeal.
It's really a very deep game.
