MMO oversaturation

#1  Postby Mononoke » Apr 07, 2012 7:17 am

I've had enough of these MMOs. Everywhere you look it seems every god damn gaming franchise is getting converted into an MMO. KOTOR & neverwinter nights are easily two of the best single player RPGs of all time, but both of these have now been converted into bloody MMOs that have none of the original charm. I'm pissed off. :nono: :nono: :nono: :nono: :nono: :nono: :nono:

I said something similar when WoW came out instead of the Warcraft adventure game they'd been working on.

There was probably never going to be a KOTOR 3 after how much KOTOR 2 sucked.

I thought that the gameplay was solid, it just...wasn't finished...

I thought Kotor 2 was shaping up to be better than even Kotor. But the rushed ending spoiled it a little.

I understand they're doing the same thing with the new Dragon Quest. I am not a happy camper.

Yeah, I suppose it could have been better than the first installment.

But this is coming from the guy who preferred Peragus to Taris, so what do I know?

I'll play the Elder Scrolls if I have the freedom to kill other players whenever I wanted. Kinda like Ultima Online and Ascheron's Call Darktide server.

Because of THQ downsizing, and the fact they can\t see a reason to compete/balance the game, they have canned the 40K MMO.
But they decided not to just scrap everything.

So it's being made into a solid single player adventure game.

Edit: Well hopefully something fun and shooty and appropriately ridiculagrim.

Naive question from an outsider to gaming: Is the move to MMO's due to consumer demand for interactive play, or the potential for higher profits for pay-to-play, and the monetizing of certain aspects of the games? Or both, or neither?

I've never considered myself a gamer, but have enjoyed mindless FPS games (mainly because I'm not good enough to play against others). I'm disturbed by the trend toward in-app purchases in mobile games, so this thread caught my eye. I have a couple of games on my iPhone that have become impossible to play unless I open my wallet (which I refuse to do). The company, Glu, refers to this gaming concept as their "persistent state revenue" model. I don't even download them anymore, free or not, because I can't beat them, or I download them just to leave a fuck-you-ish review.

Sorry for the derail.

The only problem with all the MMO's, is that they all suck.

Guild Wars 2 seems to have potential, but so far nothing has come close to wow, and that's DESPITE that fact that it's only 30% the game it used to be.
