Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch.

#1  Postby Animavore » Jan 23, 2013 7:34 pm

This game is getting 9s across the board with most critics saying it's a return to awesome JRPGs. A collaboration of Studio Ghibli and Level 5.
It should be out in America already, unfortunately it was delayed in Europe. Who's getting it? I think this game needs a thread.

So that's what the Welsh look like! I always wondered.

I played the demo on PSN and was pretty underwhelmed.

Don't own a console sadly, otherwise I would certainly try it.
Maybe it will eventually be released on the PC as well...

I was very excited for this game, being a lifelong Ghibli and RPG fan. The demo wash very short, and although the graphics were pretty the battle system came across as both awkward and dull. I've heard that the system gets much more interesting about halfway through the game, which is cool if you can manage to trudge through the first half.

Hmm. I had no trouble with the fighting system at all. The only thing was creatures tended to be one shot-ed. Though I have heard this was just for the demo and in the actual game under-powered enemies flee rather than attack.

I found the whole combat timer thing to be unnecessarily complicated and prone to problems. Then again, I often find this to be the case in games that can't decide whether they're menu / turn-based or real time. I'd rather they just ditched the awkward menus which don't really add anything to the game.

Another problem is how faceless the plot and character design is. It's all very beautiful for sure, but I don't find any of the main character designs to be very appealing, and most of your monster assistants just look like Pokemon knockoffs. The hype is pretty annoying too: return to great JRPGs? Sorry, Etrian Odyssey and SMT never stopped being great.

I admit I might be too picky, but I don't think a clunky battle system and dull character design are minor issues. I was bored stiff well before I finished playing the demo, and that's saying something considering how much I want to love this game. It's pretty much aimed at me.

pre-ordered it months ago, it's released on the 1st of february here. Can't wait. I didn't speak about it because months ago, when it's been announced, and later at the E3, when they released videos, I posted them here, but nobody seemed to be interested :)

I'm not sure what you mean by 'clunky'. I found it quite simple. Deceptively so.

I hope to get it on Friday. Far Cry 3 still has a good trade-in value so hopefully it'll cost me feck all.

Cripes! I haven't even started the game and I'm left to make a tough choice.

Do I select Japanese as audio language for the authentic Studio Ghibli experience?

Or do I select English for Drippy's awesome Welsh accent.

What to do? What - to - do?

Drat it. I'm going for English.
