edit: tuco got there first I see.

Some indie games that are good...

Kerbal Space Program
Project Zomboid
FTL

I was also going to say that, but I'd say EUIV - it's already a far more detailed and balanced game than E3 ever was.

It might be if it ever gets finished. Elite is a pretty good alternative as the bird in hand though.

Or you might want to look into No Man's Sky.

I've been following No Man's Sky. Exactly what you will be able to do in this massive universe and how different each planet will be remains the question.

Well, according to their E3 presentation this week, basically everything you can do in Elite and most if not all the things you can do in StarCitizen.

Have you ever heard of the excellent mod A New Dawn?

Well worth trying out imo.

I'm kind of concerned it's going to end up like Spore - an interesting toy with very little game to play.

Yes - from a purely scientific interest point of view, the engine they have for creating solar systems and planets is quite amazing. All the parts of the Milky Way that we know about are where they should be (and you can go visit them), but everything else is generated by the game's engine, trying model as accurately as they can what each system would be like. So if you've got a planet orbiting a star at a certain distance, the game models what that planet will most likely be like, taking into account the formation of the rest of that given system.

I think you'd find exploring particularly interesting.

The rest of the game is great as well though and improving all the time, although I think the PvP combat focus to placate the xbox crowd and the pvpers on the PC, is going to derail development for a little while. Game does need improved mission content and narrative, to help give the universe some flavour.

And I'm still learning about the flight mechanics even now. Pulled off a manoeuvre in my FDL last night that I wouldn't have thought possible.
