Apparently I have 5 hours playing time according to Origin. I haven't played a single second of the game. That's just how long I've spent waiting for it to finish checking for updates, trying to authenticate servers, etc.

Jeuxvideo.com, the first game website in France, gave it a 12/20. Doesn't make me want to even try it...

Are these issues because the game has to be played online?

Can't say I'm sad to have dodged that bullet, wish I could get SC4 to work :(

Todays penny arcade comic seems apt:

Hmm, at least it's getting some good reviews. This customer gave it 5 stars:

Got me off my video game addiction!, March 6, 2013

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: SimCity - Standard Edition [Download] (Software Download)

You'd think I'd be mega unhappy like everyone else at the constant waiting and lack of actually being able to play a game I purchased.

Well, you'd be wrong.

The hours upon hours since launch that I haven't been able to log in, whether it be sitting in queues, or server busy messages, or just plain old not working screens, I've managed to do a heap of things that I never do when I'm locked in my man cave playing video games.

I've washed the dishes, the laundry, changed the oil in the car, mopped the floors, dusted, did a spot of gardening, greeted my children who I hadn't really seen since Christmas, walked the dog, asked how my wife's day has been and listened to the entire response, restocked the groceries and many more things! My family has never been happier that they've got a father and husband again.

In fact, I feel like Simcity has given me a new lease on life. This wouldn't have been possible without the seemingly crazy decision to have constant online connections and server side save points even for single player.

So I can only thank EA and Maxis. Your failures have been my rewards. 5 stars!

Another 5-star review:

Great Loading and Queue screen simulator!, March 7, 2013

By Trent AR Michaels

I really don't understand the negative reviews for this. I've never seen another game emulate the experience of sitting at a loading or queue screen quite like this. Would definitely purchase more from this company!

This is going to have to go down in history as one of the most failed launches of all time.

I've never been more pleased to be unable to afford video games.

Does it matter?

Just a video game after all.

I never liked Simcity to much American oriented. All about building roads which in cities we dont do anymore.

Amazon suspends sales of SimCity video game

Ongoing problems with the latest version of SimCity led Amazon to briefly stop selling the game.

The web retailer stopped sales late on 7 March as players reported continued problems with the city building title.

The latest version of SimCity was launched on 5 March and, like many current games, demand players stay online as they play

It matters in as much as I believe one of the overarching reasons for requiring the user to be online to play is to prevent piracy... it's something which Microsoft are apparently planning for the next xbox so it has wider implications.

It's in the game!

Well it isn't exactly in the game. It's on a server which is unfortunately down at the moment. Sorry!
