Portal 2 is giving me grief. No sooner do I press the play button in steam, than my monitor effectively switches off telling me I have some kind of resolution problem?!?

Check the refresh rate on your graphics card?

Yep - that worked, cheers!

I wonder if I can get Civ 5 playing again using that technique - steam support were cack.

Edit: Nope, it didn't work for Civ5 - the monitor actually goes into shutdown mode when I run the game!

And World of Goo for $2.49

I played a demo of this years ago and always meant to pick it up but never saw it in Thailand.

Bloody difficult, I have already been reduced to shouting at lumps of virtual goo on my monitor!

I heartily recommend that any fans of stategy buy King's Bounty from 1C. It's a bit like Heroes of Might and Magic but a hundred times better. I have had many hundreds of hours of entertainment from it, you can replay and replay, utilising different strategies and troop combinations. I like to play no-loss game on the hardest setting. It makes it highly tactical, a bit like fancy chess.
I bought the HoMM pack because I kept hearing how KB was similar but I am really quite dissapointed so far, KB kicks HoMM arse.

The best HOMM was number 3. It allowed such a diversity of classes, I could play it over and over again!

Advice needed!

Fallout New Vegas is up for $4.99

I've never played it, but I've heard it's good.

I'm not really into guns or FPS, but I do like RPG's.

Would you advise buying it?

Edit: The Ultimate Edition is $9.99 - if the advice to the first question is YES, is it also worth considering the ultimate edition?

I'm currently playing HoMM5, but I'm already finding myself a bit bored with it, it's just so samey. I have some of the expansions and spin-offs d/ling as well as HoMM6. I'm crossing my fingers and hoping that it starts to approach the brilliance of KB at some point, I'm beginning to suspect I may have wasted my money though. :(

I don't know which features the Ultimate Edition boasts, but the core game is definitely worth $4.99.
Also, seems like I kinda overlooked this thread. I posted about Steam's wallet-slaughtering in the general video games thread.

This is what it says about the Ultimate Edition:

With the introduction of the Ultimate Edition, Bethesda Softworks offers you the chance to double-down and get the complete package of New Vegas fun. For the first time in one package, you can get all the Fallout: New Vegas content including the full suite of highly acclaimed add-on content: Dead Money, Honest Hearts, Old World Blues and Lonesome Road. To sweeten the pot, you’ll be armed with the latest cache of unique weapons, ammo types and recipes from the most recent add-on packs: Courier’s Stash and Gun Runners Arsenal. Whether you’re a seasoned explorer of the Mojave or playing the game for the first time, you’ll find there are more friends and enemies to make, more consequences to your actions and more opportunities to live in glory or infamy throughout the Wasteland. The choices you make will be as crucial to your survival as ever.

Beyond the Wasteland: The world of New Vegas is more expansive than ever. Each new distinct area presents a fresh set of branching-quests, remarkable personalities and more chances to play the Savior or the Pariah to the natives of New Vegas.
Shiny New Toys: Each add-on pack increases the mountain of armaments already at your disposal. Whether you’re an in-your-face brawler or a long-range gunner, weapons such as the Two-Step Goodbye (unique ballistic fists) or Sleepytime (a handy 10mm Sub-Machinegun) will give that warmonger in you a chance to flex your ammo-filled muscles.
Room to Grow: With each of the four main add-on packs, the maximum levelcap is increased by 5 levels, ultimately raising the ceiling to Level 50.

Dead Money: Lured into a trap masquerading as the Sierra Madre Casino, you are thrown into a high stakes game where you’ll have to work with three other lost souls if you want to survive.
Honest Hearts: An expedition into Utah’s Zion National Park goes horribly wrong and you become embroiled in a war between tribes and put into a conflict between a New Canaanite missionary and the mysterious Burning Man.
Old World Blues: Transported to the Big MT research crater, you are enlisted by the Think Tank to save them from their own science experiments that have gone horribly out of control.
Lonesome Road: Ulysses, the original Courier Six, contacts you and promises to answer why he refused to deliver the Platinum Chip at the start of Fallout: New Vegas, but only if you make one last journey into the treacherous canyons of the Divide.

Incidentally - Saint's Row 3rd Collection is 87% off at the moment ($13.29). Not interesting for me, but maybe someone wants it.

Have you played Civ5 yet? I bought it and just started playing it, but it's so different to what I recognise as Civ. There's no unit stacking, it makes combat very different.

I bought Civ 5 when it first came out, but for some unknown reason, it simply stopped working. When I fire it up, it turns my monitor off!

Nevermind, tbh I think 4 is better than 5, and 3 is better than 4. Civ 2 is probably the greatest, but the graphics are no longer really playable for me.

I really enjoyed Alpha Centauri. I loved the unit design feature.
