Just noticed on there another cgreat game that nearly made my list:
Soul Reaver

Engaging plot and some of the best voice acting you will ever hear in a game. The later games continue a pretty convoluted but imaginative epic though sadly it looks like we may never get a concluding part.

In chronological order, and chosen on the basis of wow-factor at the time...

1. Mattel Auto Race (1977)

First video game I ever owned... or had ever seen, for that matter. I was envy of my school chums, enthralled and delighted we were by all the excitement of making a tiny LED move back and forth across 3 lanes, while dodging other LEDs which fell down from the top of the screen.


2. Colossal Caves Adventure (CP/M version 1981)

What's this? I'm standing by the end of a road before a small brick building, you say? ... Several days and several-hundred twisty little passages (all alike) later, I'd claimed the treasure! Huzzah! And so began my obsession with text-based adventures. (Yes, I was a very pasty little child.)


3. Donkey Kong Game & Watch (1982)

With its super-hi-tech dual screen, Donkey Kong game & watch brought home a real arcade game you could hold in your hands and play for as long as you wanted without having to feed in those hard-to-come-by 20c coins! What more could you want?


4. Pitfall 2: The Lost Caverns (1982)

Ahh Atari... so many great games, but this one excelled itself. It just kept going and going and going.... deeper and deeper and deeper!


5. Dungeon Master (1987)

Many hours spent alone in my bedroom with the blinds drawn and the headphones on, gingerly peeking around corners or mashing the keyboard to escape backwards in a blind panic from a horde of relentless fungi!! My parents must have wondered what on earth I was doing in there for hours on end...


6. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (1992)

My first Zelda game. I want to include them ALL, but I'll restrain myself. At first I though it was a bit naff... but then I went outside (in the game, of course - not really outside!), and such a lot of it there was! Sprawling landscapes, massive multi-leveled dungeons, devious puzzles! It was immense!! I was hooked.


7. Doom (1993)

What fun I had freaking myself out with Doom's awful ambience; hellish enemies, otherworldly noises and surreal architectural monstrosities. The 3D was mind-blowing, unlike anything we'd had before. What a trip! And it was free to boot!


8. Myst (1993)

My kind of game. Abstract, surreal and cerebral. So simple, and so good!


9. Magic Carpet (1994)

Oh Magic Carpet, where did all those lost hours go to? Alternating between frenetic monster meyhem, and serene ambient atmospherics, this game was truly truly addictive. Send out the balloons! Collect the gold balls! More gold balls! Can't get enough gold balls!! The 3D was incredible, and you could CHANGE the landscape! Amazing!


10. Super Mario Galaxy (2007)

Pure, exhilarating fun.

I both loved and hated Donkey Kong Game & Watch . It was great fun to play and i spent hours on it. Much to my mate annoyance given he was the one who actually owned the thing. I hated it because half the time it kicked my ass.

I don't have time to do a top ten atm but I notice that no-one has mentioned any of the Civ games. You people are dead to me.

Civ doesn't even compare to EU3, Total War and Age of Empires.

I know what I missed.

Holy hand grenade, concrete donkey. Fatality!! Nothing but fun.

I have way too many games I like to put them in any real order, but I can name my number one. The only game I return to time after time, whenever life gets a bit tough or I feel a bit down this game is there to remind me of the fun times.



Quest For Glory was a damn masterpiece.

Thief the Dark Project Gold
Some of the fan made missions could teach game designers a thing or two.

Dishonored
Because it comes closest (at the moment) to claiming the mantle of the game above.

Half Life 2

Assassins Creed 2.
For storming the Vatican to take down Borgia alone this game makes the list.

Max Payne
Because at the time it was absolutely stunning and raised the bar in so many ways.

Mass Effect 3
Yes there were issues with the ending, which to my mind the free download eventually (moslty) fixed. The voice commands with kinnect and the multiplayer exceeded my expectations.

Civilisation
Spearmen mountain fort beats panzer… what?

Halo 3

Skyrim
Snuck it. I get the arguments of why Morrowind was a superior game, and I would have agreed with a lot of them at some level. But restarting a low level character a few months ago for nostalgia’s sake flagged up all the frustrating issues there are with it.

The only Civ. game I've played is Civ. V. It's good, but nothing mind-blowing. If I can defeat a horde of Spanish conquistadores with nothing but one unit of Warriors and a city...well...

Now Gal. Civ. II - there's a game with some classy AI.

Civ (1) was the greatest single advance in computer games since their invention. All the later versions of CIv were just incremental improvements

<OT> My record for Windows Solitaire (XP) is 37 seconds, can anyone beat that? </OT>

Also, how encouraging it is to see such great taste among the gamers here, pretty much everyone has picked at least one game I've known and loved.
