It's a great game. Play Ironman. Autosave with no second chances. Factor in the losses instead of seeing them as set-backs. That which does not kill me (the group in this case) makes me stronger. All that Nietzschean shit.

You're playing like th ou expect everyone to survive. Think Aliens or some shit. Only Ripley survives. And some crappy kid.

But losses aren't fun. One of the things I really like about the game is the VERY element of treating every soldier with care and leveling them through missions. It gives me an incentive to have them survive.

Without reloading, the game would be an absolute nightmare. And not just because of what I've already said, but because of other bullshit, as well. Like, being hit through full cover, or even through a whole fucking cliff. Okay, that last one only happened once, but it forced me to restart a whole mission. On the one where I have to clear an alien base to get to a Sectoid Commander. Just before the final chamber, there is a large hall, with a wall or rocks on either side. I moved up with my men, carefully inching forward, from cover to cover, thinking "Oh, there's an entire wall of rocks blocking my sight from that end, no way anything will be able to fire at me, let alone see me, as I move up along the corridor." Turned out, not only was I noticed, but the two little shit Sectoids shot RIGHT THROUGH A FUCKING BOULDER and hit me, when in any other circumstance, my men would've been in, at least, partial cover. But, no. They actually got flanked, because of clear bullshit like this. And this was admittedly an extreme case.

However, they way cover works, in general, is almost as dumb. I can be on a rooftop, kneeling behind a sign or ledge or whatever and the enemy could hit me, FROM BELOW, from where they already have an aim reduction and from where they probably shouldn't even see me, in the first place. But, no. Unless I hunker down, they can shoot right through it. I remember the first time I encountered this nonsense, in an escort mission. I ordered my guy into cover, behind a base of a statue and/or its flowers that were planted in these huge fuck-off blocks of stone, on elevated ground, thinking there was no way they could hit me. Turned out, they didn't just nick my soldier's face, as of they stuck their head out at the wrong moment, they shot right through the objects. RIGHT THROUGH OBJECTS. All of it looks incredibly stupid. And it IS.

Cannot believe some people don't see anything wrong with such things. Hell yeah! I love seeing my carefully placed men being shot and watch as the shots go right through solid, thick concrete corners and rocks.

Oh, forget a proper TV-series! They should make a parody short, where they'd shoot right through objects with a pistol. Or miss an enemy, 3 meters away, that's standing still, with a huge laser chain-gun.

You'd make a very bad commander in real life. Military leaders send people to their death all the time. Sometimes in the millions. They're collateral damage. A means to an end. This is the harsh reality of life.

But, this isn't real life. It's (supposed to be) entertainment. It's a fucking game.

In real life, a fucking soldier ordered to shoot an enemy standing practically in front of them would blow their fucking head off. Not miss, because he had only an 85% chance of hitting it and someone didn't show him that info on a HUD. :smug:

Gonna restart the brief HE Teclis campaign I started before I went to Uni, to rectify some silly mistakes.

I sincerely hope that what I just encountered is a bug and not WAI. I just had an enemy army move out of a city I was besieging and attack an army of mine at sea, that was on it's way to reinforce them.
This makes no sense, neither the AI nor the player has ever been able to do this in previous titles. It's also the reason that you'll lose all your troops if you lose a defending siege battle.
More-over it just doesn't make sense that a full warhost would be able to leave a city without the besieging army taking notice and intercepting.

I was going to say, as a joke, "they built a tunnel". But then I remembered a race could travel underground in the second Warhammer TW, if it's the game you are referring to. Could it be the reason ?

Dwarves, Wood Elves, Beastmen and Greenskins could tunnel in Warhammer 1, but only by putting their army in a special tunnelingstance. Which could only be done outside a city and would prevent them from attacking enemy armies or cities.
The faction I was sieging were Dark Elves and they dont have any tunnneling abilities.

I don't know anything about Ironman but when I play RTS games like Age of Empires or Starcraft my troops are nothing more than resources and pawns. If one dies I start queing for more.

Hell in Age of Empires II every time I played the Vikings I would start sending around 10-20 militia to just keep pressuring my opponent as I continued to build up and by age 3 I would get my berserkers and seige and just Zerg the base. I'd lose most of my army, but I'd annhilate my opponent and that's what matters

Just for the record, I'm playing a Legend/Ironman/Grim Horizon/no tutorial missions run at the moment. Zero soldier deaths at this point and I'm about two thirds of the way through.

So, yeah, it's totally possible, because I'm not really all that great at the game.

I actually like to hang about on the steam forums from time to time and read posts from all the baddies. Every new "The RNG is broken" thread cracks me up - the game cheats in the player's favour on every difficulty below legend.

What's Grim Horizon?

Yeah I was reading the notes on difficulties below Legend and there's all types of invisible aim assits/bonuses.

Grim Horizon is the option that makes dark events permanent once they trigger.

It's a bit of a lottery as to what goes through early on. I got a bit lucky, with lost world going through first, which means that although the missions are slow I ended up getting promotions faster than I otherwise would. I've got something like 6 or 7 stacked up now I'm late in the campaign. 2 of the 3 chosen are dead though and so are 2 of 3 rulers. Still no casualty or failed mission, so things are going well. The real challenge will be getting past the archon king. Just need the tech and ranks and then a well played mission so I get the drop on him and it should be plain sailing to a 0 deaths win.

At this point the only other danger is probably the surgical or low profile sit reps.

Just reached 170h played on Disgaea 5. And I still have at least 30h to go if I want to finish the last battles I'm missing. Never reached that level on any of the previous episodes.

I didn't see such an option. I wonder if it's removed from console. I'll look when I get home.
